I have 2 horses and currently I turn out in a morning about 7am and put away around 8pm at night. My OH says this is the right thing to do but I have friends who have theirs turned out 24/7 now, what do others do?
Ours are out 24/7. If the weather gets hot then they'll be out at night and in during the day, though where we are now they have good trees to shelter under.
Bit of both....stabled at night usually but in summer we have 24/7 turnout if we wish. Mine are all living out at present on fantastic grass.....I tend to bring mine in every now and again especially if the weather has been bad, they just fart all night and deflate.

mine are out 24/7 in summer, from may-november. and then in for in during the nights in winter months.
I think it depends on the horse and on how you feel as an owner.
My friend keeps her dressage horse in, cos shes scared he'll get stolen
bless her, he is a beaut tho.
Mine are fine out, they dont like been in, also costs more on hay and straw too! ha
xx
i like mine to be out as much as possible, ab's legs fill when shes in she tend to do alot better out, and well my highlands a highand shes made to live outside lol!! as has been said before they r horses
Out 24/7 in the summer unless they've just moved fields and the grass is too good as he tends to scour for the first week so I like to give him a break. Otherwise why make work for yourself? The horses will be much happier out as well.
Winter is different as you need to make sure they're getting enough hay and feed. That's why I keep mine then in rather than warmth, as rugs do a very good job of keeping them warm and dry these days.
Mine are out 24/7 now. At the beggining of the year I moved from a stable yard to a 5 acre field. I have a big field shelter for them though but they use it more when its sunny to escape the flies, rather than when its raining. Also there is lots of natural shelter aswell - lots of trees.

same as that ..mine out 24/7 in summer and in in winter
Mine are out 24/7 365 as we don't have stables. Nice 6 acre field, electric fenced off to prevent bloating! We're currently using the bottom third of the field which has the field shelter in, they always seem to use the field shelter in the summer and ignore it in the winter. Whole field is surrounded by trees so nice and sheltered near the edges.
Mine are all out 24/7 during the summer, and they come in at nights during the winter. They all prefer to be out but if the weather is very bad I bring in our 30 year old and the little pony to keep him company.
Why does he think "its the right thing to do" bringing them in at all?
Put them out 24/7 I say, they will be far happier and healthier for it! Mine live out all year round and that includes my competition horses (not just natives).

All 4 of mine are out 24/7 from March - November. I kept my competition horse in later this year...till early May and I have to say he was stressed- he is a different horse since I chucked him out. he comes in the odd night if we are off to a show early (he's grey!) :
Mine are a mix of weedy TBs and heavy hunters and they just love being out-so healthy for them!

Up until two months ago I would have been one of those people who were all for turning them out 24/7 as soon as yard rules allow. However this year I have seen a horse who was turned out that way, on to his usual paddock that he had been out on for hours every day during the winter, contract grass sickness and have to be PTS.
Some reading on the subject has taught me that May is a statistically high risk month to start full time turnout in respect of this horrible illness, so from next spring mine will continue to be stabled at night until at least June or will go out much earlier in the year, depending on grass availability.
Out 24/7 365 days per year...great for him and me! I used to bring my lad into a stable each night but he would always be very grumpy in the morning and desparate to get out again, he is so much happier out doing his own thing and can wander into his stable at any time as it is in his field and open at all times. He goes in there each night of his own accord to have a lie down sleep!
I never thought I would be able to put him out all the time as he is a good doer but I have found a way to manage his grass intake and feed him hay in the field most of the year and it works fine for his weight and me!
mines (horse and a shetland) are in at night all the year around. I also think its better for them as keeps them in a routine which they like and also stops them spending lots of time munching! In the wild a horse would have to go find food but in his field he doesnt need to forage or travel to find grass.
the pony had lamintis previous so the rountine prevents this reoccuring and also is better for the horse as he doesnt bloat.
Ours are out 24/7 at the mo, we have a really good set up which means we can bring them into a smaller area with natural shelter if the weather worsens.
They will be stabled in bad weather and usually overnight oct-mar, with the exception of good weather, when they can stay out rugged.
