Is 250kg of haylage ALOT? Because, I found a farm in surrey who do haylage and they said you can collect or they can deliver. I wondered could 250kg fit in the back of a medium sized car. Or is it loads. Sorry, I probably sound really stupid.

thanks,

Well, is it in one bale or bags? A 4ft roundbale of hay weighs about 750kg here, so you are looking about a third of that.

It's going to be a volume thing rather than weight I would have thought. Why not ring them and ask how it's packaged? IMO no way would it fit, you might need to find someone with a bigger car or trailer.

1/4 of a ton in one bale??? you would need a trailer or pick up . it also depends how many you have to feed.. you would need to be feeding 5+ big horses to use it up before it goes off..

Sorry - can't read my own writing - a round bale is 250-300kg here so NO, you will definitely NOT get it in a car!!!!

As perfect11s says, it goes off really quickly so if you only have one horse and it is one bale (which is probable from a farm) it's not worth it.

That's a big round (or square) bale of haylage, so, as everyone says, you'd never get it in a car.
Once opened, haylage usually has to be eaten in 5 - 7 days, so you'd need at least 3 or 4 horses to get through it before it went off.

considering you should feed 1.5-3.5% of your horses body weight each day, it's not a great deal if you are feeding more than one horse!

Even using those calculations, you'd need at least 3 full size horses to use a round bale in the usual 5 - 7 days.

I think you'd need five Mr Average horses

500kg horse = 10kg haylage at 2% = 25 days

So it would take five horses five days to get through it!

Nah, my three would get through one bale of haylage in about 5 - 6 days, and they're average sized.

1 @ 550kg
1 @ 600kg
1 @ 750kg
Total = 1900kg x 2.5% (more usual than 2%) = 47.5kg each day.
I'd still like to see the car load/unload operation though.
