i am doing my first 2 day event next weekend. we just looked at the schedule but it doesnt tell us how long the roads and tracks are or anything. it is just a schools competition but im really nervous now as i only just found out we had to do STEEPLE CHASE aswell as roads and tracks, and i dont know if eddie will be fit enough as he hasnt done that much in one day before! he has done heaps of ODEs though, but he is a big chunky type and although he is very fit he isn't the type of horse that pulls me on much, unless he hasnt had work a few days before. do you think it would be best to not do anything on thursday and friday, or is that just asking for trouble?

does anyone know how long-ish the roads and tracks will be and how many jumps will be in the steeplechase? thanks!

Well what I would do would be to get him down to the all weather gallop today and give him a good puff out, a couple of good strong canters, interval training say 4 x 4min canters

Do a good walk out tomorrow, just walking/marching for an hour and a half.
Tuesday school/jump
Weds- another spin on gallops as of Sunday...
Thursday walk only 30 min
Fri- lunge/ VERY gentle school

Also up his feed this week, perhaps one extra scoop a day at lunchtime/late night (build up to this-1/2 scoop at first)

But as its a schools/unaff event I doubt the roads and tracks/steeplechase will be very taxing

But the main thing is to clear his wind and give him a good blow out at least twice.

If he's fit enough to ODE you won't find the 2day a problem, the roads and tracks were fine when CCJ did it, in fact she slowed her up and got time faults!
The steeplechase doesn't have to be done flat out either, just a strong canter was enough to be within the time, but I would find out the distances before the event for the R and T and get yourself a stopwatch (you can use them unaffilliated..)

The roads and tracks usually isnt done too fast (especially the 2nd ones after the SC) so it doesnt seem to take too much out of them. Make sure you really really cool him off in the 10 min box though to help refresh him!

If you think he'll have more energy by not riding him the 2 days before the comp then dont! I never ride one of mine the day before as he performs better when slightly fresher!

thanks, i managed to find out more info on it off the net, found out timing and distances etc and have now sorted out a decent programme to work to this week. am also getting him clipped as his winter coat is coming and he gets sweaty easily now so hoping it will keep him cooler and fresher!
