Frodo and I went to Hunters Equestrian at Cirencester today for my little ex-racing pony's second attempt at dressage - what a fabulous venue and such lovely welcoming owners :)

The weather was just revolting unfortunately, although the rain did slacken off slightly whilst I was in the warm up - we didn't get out of walk due to tension, and I really wasn't sure we would get into the arena! First test was in the lovely indoor arena which we walked into without batting an eyelid (yay!) and although perhaps it wasn't a test to write home about, combined with a judge who was quite robust in her marking too (which I never mind), I was really pleased :) We managed to walk this time (in our first competition Frodo jogged all through the walk sections) and got a 6 from the robust judge for our free walk :) :) I managed to go wrong in a walk and trot test (don't ask me how...) which lost us a couple of marks :(

Then we had to go and lurk in the car park in the pouring rain between our first and second tests, I didn't dare go into the warm up again as there were already 6 in there & I really didn't want F to upset anyone else's horse. The second test was outside in an arena parallel to the warm up, in torrential rain. F was so busy gawping at the horses in the warm up that he didn't really achieve a single decent movement :( It was character building, even though the judge was more generous and we achieved 2% more than the first test!

Quickly put F back on the lorry and tucked him up with his hay net, then went to get my test sheets - and I was astonished to see we had won the first class!!!! A beautiful red rosette adorned our test sheet, you could have knocked me down with a feather....

Well OK, I have to admit it :p, the only other horse in the class went HC :D :D :D Gave me a good giggle at the time though, and ironically I am very happy with today as we achieved my objectives - go to a new venue without a stress explosion, and actually walk in a test instead of jogging! I am easily pleased..... :)

Hoe lovely to get such a reward for a walk instead of a jog hehe

At the end of the day you had IMPROVEMENT that's all any of us can ask

Well done

Hurray a reply :D Thank you Soulfull, after 157 views and no comments I feared everyone was underwhelmed by Frodo's achievement :p :)

I was slightly disappointed that I didn't achieve my other goal for today - a 7 for my trot work - but in hindsight it was never going to happen with robust judge marking my first test and the second test being truly appalling - but there WAS improvement, and that's what makes me very happy :) :)

Hey! Well done, especially for even going there in the rain. Glad you got the walk this time. Now NO getting the test wrong next time and you will get even more marks, haha!!

LOL thanks Pinkvboots and Chiffy - I will admit it was totally foul in the rain, if I hadn't known he really, really needs the experience I would have turned over and gone back to sleep when the alarm went off at 6am today :)

And yes Chiffy, next time I will try and remember the test.... goodness only knows how I could have got such a simple test wrong :o

Well done for braving the vile weather and for achieving your objectives in challenging conditions! Sounds like a very positive outing :)

Excellent day I'd say, lots of positives!
Its always a good thing if the horse can work in the rain I see so many where the rider or horse just cannot cope with adverse weather conditions, which in this country is just setting yourself up for failure ;). Plus I'm very jealous it's only taken you two outings to get a calmer, explosive free day, think it took Topaz about 2 years and she is a pretend carriage horse not even a ex-racer :D.
The intro's are far more complicated than the prelims or even some of the novices, so once canter is acceptable to show off at a comp you'll find it easier to remember.
With the warm up issues, can you hire an arena with other horses to get him use to working around others? I find sometimes they are fine at home with others, but its when you take them somewhere new + lots of other horse that they have a bit of a melt down. Also remember not to feel to stressed about upsetting others (be safe obviously) but most riders have been there and as long as you're not crashing into others then a bit of bouncing about shouldn't be too upsetting to others, a confident outlook can help settle them and if you're anxious not to unsettle others it perhaps might not help matters?

Just fab overall though, and pictures of the fine beast in question please :).

Hey, ANY frilly is a good frilly in my book. We have clinics at our yard with 3 people. And rosettes to 3rd place. Haha. Well done, particularly in getting out in such horrid weather, blurk.

Thanks very much AH that is a lovely post, I really appreciate your comments :) The lovely owners at Hunters also suggested arena hire as an idea, definitely think I will be trying that one - Frodo has an unfortunate tendency towards impromptu lateral work when he gets stressed, which was definitely in evidence yesterday :D I would provide pictures but have yet to get a decent one where he doesn't look like a total giraffe :D :D

Well done for getting out in that foul weather, and brilliant news that he was calmer for you! Well done on the red frilly :D

Thank you to both of you :) I am really hoping that it is dry (and not windy!) on 13th, we are going back to the same venue for another go :D We had an amazing lesson tonight where Frodo was fabulous, so if I can replicate a little bit of that next time out I shall be a very happy bunny :D

Haha bless him, Topaz has taken to anticipating flying changes and then launching in the air, which can be a bit unsettling for other people in the warm-up when a black beast suddenly launches itself (sometimes sounding like she is gas propelled) upwards with little seeming to prompt it :o.

Come on I'm sure he looks a very lovely giraffe ;).
