We have a fantastic JRTx who is just over a year old, we have always thought about having 2 dogs to entertain each other !!! and would rather do it whilst our boy is younger rather than waiting. Does anyone have any views/experince on getting a male or female ? He is fine socialising with other dogs, I just wondered if any of you folks had any views.
Thanks

Do it!! We got our second vizsla a few months ago, having had our 2yr old since a pup. We had a few teething problems (ha ha excuse the irony- some HHOers will know it was a biting problem

) however we wouldn't be without them both now

I have always wanted a second dog to keep my boy company but at 6 I think i've left it too late, he is rather set in his ways and not sure what he'd think to another after being top dog for so long.

i have always been told a bitch would be better to join a male as the dynamics are easier, how true this is I don't know but good luck either way.

A second dog is a great idea especially if you get the timing right. The best time is when your first dog is young enough to appreciate a lively friend but old enough to have some basic training (e.g. the second dog will copy the first so having a good recall with the first makes life so much easier).

Best combination is bitch dog, second best dog dog and bitch bitch are the most likely to argue (although all dogs may have spats). Your boy needs to be neutered though otherwise you may end up with more dogs that you counted on! (two entire males are also much more likely to argue that two neutered ones).

Go for it!!

Thanx for the advise its really helpful, he is neutered so we wont have a problem there. So the best combo is a male and female, 2nd best two boys. I really dont want to minimise a fighting issue like I have seen people posting on here about.

I have two dogs (one whole, one neutered) and they are inseparable. However I wish there was a bigger age gap between them rather than just one year, I dread to think of them going at the same time in years to come

We got a rescue Yorkie boy dog aged 8 months when our Springer Spaniel bitch was 4 years of age. When they initially met each other I thought maybe we had made a terrible mistake, but it was just a case of them sorting out the dynamics, and their relationship is fantastic, they are great company for each other despite being so different.

They play rough games, but both are submissive in that they roll on their backs to fight and they mouth each other without biting.

I'm a little concerned my Springer might go before my Yorkie, as he is very dependent on her. I know my Springer would cope on her own as she is tough as old boots.

Definitely get opposite sexes, and don't panic if it looks like they aren't getting on to start with, it may take a short while for them to get the measure of each other, but in the long run you'll be glad you got a companion.
