I took Daisy on our second hunt today, after our first one two weeks ago not being very good as she lost a shoe after an hour and i had no breaks!
So after spending the majority of the morning washing her and getting her looking gleaming, we hacked to the meet, (about a five minute walk from mine), she was a wally when we arrived as she could hear the hounds in the lorry barking and howling, but nothing too mad!
Then all of a sudden she decided that she didn't want to walk around any more she wanted to be with the horse, who was being warmed up over the other side of the field we were in, I said no you will stay here and listen to me, she said no I wont, so proceeded to spin around on the spot about 8 times, lost her balance fell backwards on to her bum and i slid off like i was on a slide!!!
So there we go, I fell half on my back and half on my bum (which has rather a nice piece of ahem natural padding on it)! thank goodness and I had a body protector on too, so apart from feeling very shakey, I was okay, she was okay too, she proceeded to gallop over to this horse she so wanted to get to in the first place, god knows why!, then it took us twenty minutes to catch her.
No I didn't get back on her, I just came home, I think i was too shocked.
I am so dissapointed with myself, I was so looking forward to it, now I am thinking if only i had let her go over to this horse, maybe she would have been okay?

Sorry it's long, just wanted to share, anyone else had a rubbish day?

Sounds like my day on saturday, I wish I had come off and been able to come home

The horse I was riding managed to barge backwards into just about everyone there, through a hedge and a ditch, end up hock deep in a ploughed field and still manage to go backwards

I have never been so shattered in all my life when I finally got off

Sometimes they do just latch onto one horse for no particlar reason. We've got 3 horses we hunt and all of them do this- they all nap towards something/someone until they get their own way. Usually it's illogical.
I wouldnt worry too much- she's prob just baffled about the whole hunting idea and feeling a bit insecure

Have you got a friend you could go with next time? Maybe with a horse that your horse knows? We had a manic point to pointer many years ago and we always took it hunting with a steady companion.

Thanks guys, it's good to know that i am not the only one that has trouble, I am hoping she will settle.
I amgoing to try her one more time in 3 weeks, and that will be the decider.

Aw, hope you are ok. I believe the second hunt is the worst because in the first hunt the horse really doesn't know what's happening but in the second hunt they know and they can get a bit excited. She'll get better once she goes to more

Glad to hear you're ok!

I hoping to take my boy out for the first time in a few weeks so keep an eye out for a similar update!!! Him being him he won't be well behaved on his first time out and I'm drastically trying to improve/resolve the brakes situation!

Keep taking her!!

When I first took my Welshy he was an absolute nightmare. He'd been a couple of times before I bought him, I was terrified, he thought he knew what it was all about and just didn't see why he should listen to me. Spent the whole time rearing, bucking, spinning round and generally being horrid. The Hunt Sec told me to keep taking him and that he would settle. I wasn't convinced but took him out a couple more times or so, suddenly one day I was about an hour in and realised he hadn't played up once!

Since then I've used him to nanny baby horses, been able to leave half way through the day if I want to, everything. He just settled one day and has been a gem ever since. The Sec came up to me on Boxing Day of our second season and (the day he was nannying a 4yo) and just said "I told you so"

Seriously, scary as it is, just keep taking her and she will settle.

I always thought the third time was the worst just depends on how quickly your horse becomes aware of what is going to go on! Murphy was horrendous the 2nd and 3rd time out but settled down after that. We had a few changes in bitting and martingale options and now he is a pro, he just stands like a rock during the meet bit and then settles into a nice pace once we go off. We always went with a more experienced friend but Murph didn't seem too bothered about them. Although when we did our last endurance he latched onto one horse and got very upset at vet checks when his mate left before him. He'd never seen the horse before in his life and it was really embarrassing so I know how you felt. Big hugs and I hope you get it together soon. I'm looking forward to Boxing day when Murphy is coming back for a holiday and we'll be going hunting for the 1st time in 2 years so I'll be mainly hanging on I think!

my boy always has a shocking first few days of each season, and this satuday was no exception.... our first day this season. by march he'll be hunting in a cavesson snaffle bridle, but until christmas i usually have him in our cross country get up (myler combination bit, and flash noseband) and i still got hauled all over the place. i was trying to take it easy and sticking to the back. all went well until the whip galloped past the 3 of us stood quietly, Ron bunny hopped and just about jumped our friend's 15hh to follow the whip who carried on regardless! it was all i could do to hold on as Ron yanked his head down and ploughed on, taking no notice of my 3 inch reins bridged across his neck and me standing in my stirrps... am so so sore today. :-( have a sore neck and blisters between my fingers, and the most bizarre bruise down the lengh of my left thigh!

next will be better tho with any luck!
