2nd lesson in 10 years

Sitting rather immobile on the sofa after my second lesson in 10 years. The first was last week, and, despite a great teacher, pony and stables, I have to admit I really didn't enjoy it. As I hobbled around last week I started to wonder if all the riding I had done up the age of 18 was a dream. I bounced about with zero balance, hopeless seat and absolutely zero recollection of what to do with my legs. I was so disappointed having thought everything would come back, but booked another lesson for today. As I clambered on, my inner thighs screeched with pain (6 days on!!), and I wondered whether I was doing the right thing. However after a very simple, basic lesson I am over the moon. I feel much more comfortable, my balance is coming back, and although my legs really were quite knackered, I started to feel like I was more in control. Booked in for a lunge lesson next weekend, and hoping that will help. Will also try and get back into pilates this week to get legs going again. Took myself off to local shop recommended by instructor to restock, and am proud owner of new jodhpurs, beautiful boots, hat etc... So relieved I enjoyed it today, and really excited about where the next few months riding will lead me.
Any tips about how to get back into riding after such a long break? I didn't ride for years as university/living in London took its toll/expense, and don't really have a plan as such, but excited to be back around horses.

I got back into riding after an x years break, but it was a while ago now.

Stretches, before and after, will help. The piliates will help to strengthen your core muscles (do Equipilates if you can :D).

After riding, a nice Radox bath :D :D

oooooooooooo i so know how yu feel - i had a 30 odd year break lol
i would suggest a hot bath before and after ur lesson - and leg stretdches in between, in a few lessons you will feel bett honestly. Ive had a few weeks off due to the weather and was back to achey legs, a few rides in its gettign easier - stretch and bathe!!!
Also - when your legs ache, think how george you will look with those toned muscles lol - good luck !!!! xxx
 
thank you! having read lots of threads, I'm so relieved it's not just me who feels so achey from riding... had totally forgotten how physical it is. Really easy to remember how physical yard work was, but had completely forgotten about the legs. Hoping new kit will help a little, as i shouldn't be struggling against my boots so much. Suspect a lunge lesson will just about kill them off.
Absolutely loving this website - it's helping a fair bit come back.
