I have had a real problem since June of last year, I took on a young colt that was painfully thin and in a terrible mess.
Someone had heard that I was looking for a Friesian, this one was a cross but when I saw him I could not just walk away.
I have had two vets and a chiropractor I am doing everything I can with feed etc but have only had reasonable success a couple of times in getting a reasonably solid movement for a max of 7 days.
Has anyone ever had this kind of problem or have known anyone who has, I have had bloods done, wormed, changed feed and so on.
He will not eat hay at all no matter how good but he has doubled his weight down to Leighs senior which I can't get at the moment and Ready mash extra.
Any ideas?

Have tried probiotics of all kinds, on codien to try to slow gut function down
now.
Has had acupuncture and lots of herbal treatments.
Grass makes it worse, he is well in himself and looks great but under developed.

Sounds like a gut flora problem. I would give LifeForce by Alltech a go. It is by far the best supplement I have found for my guys.

It is sorting out the skin problems on my Friesian that herbs etc have not.

Putting weight on a Connemara pony that I couldn't get any weight on, no matter what I have tried - expensive foods, supplements (other than LF), herbs, scoping, worm counts, teeth checked etc... This had the vets scratching their heads. I was about to call the vets out again when I decided to give LF a go. I should also mention that he was getting very picky about food and had stopped eating hay of any kind. He is now wolfing his food and back to eating hay.

A nervous youngster who has been struggling to put weight on. I rescued him. He was not in great shape and his nervous state wasn't helping him put weight on - box walking etc. Since being on it, he has started to calm down significantly, his coat is starting to get a shine on it and he is starting to put weight on.

I get mine from Rutland Horse Extras - www.rutlandhorseextras.co.uk.

What are his teeth like?

Not eating hay may be due to dental problems - he will be shedding caps and getting new teeth and surprisingly they can get very sharp very young.

A good equine dentist - not the vet - needs to have a good look. I was very surprised when I had my Clydesdale looked at as a 2yr old she had a bottom molar growing through incorrectly as the cap had not come off properly and the new tooth was being forced through at the wrong angle.

Will he eat chaff? or sugarbeet as both will help bulk up his feed and so slow the movement of his food.

Try bicarb... seriously, it seems like I keep advising the same thing to people over and over again, but it was the only thing that sorted by mare's tummy out.

She has had constant wet poo since I got her, in May. After treating for ulcers twice, using every probiotic and prebiotic available to mankind, deworming her and checking her teeth, still no improvement. Then I started adding a table spoon of bicarb to each of her feeds (6 in total) and voilá, in less than a week she had normal poo.

EXCUSE ME but you did not rescue him at all! you bought him! I have plenty of photographic evidence of how well he was looking while i had him.

Brewers yeast did the trick for my mare the problem for mine is rich food so they do best on poor but clean quality hay and the only stuff I can can get is sheep feed hay which is lovely but gives them the runs they wont eat it wet so no chance of soaking it down all are fine on grass and grass feeds though. I would suspect worm damage to be honest
You need to get him onto a high fibre low carb/sugar diet with lots of oil in it so get his weight up
