Hi All,

I am just doing my research into setting up a basic self drive horse box hire using a 3.5 tonne horse box. I want a bit of side income that i can hopefully run alongside my current 9-5 job. Does anyone have any experience with these sorts of businesses or can give me any advice? I've been running some numbers to make sure the business would earn money and from my workings it would have to be rented out on average 2 times a week for it to be successful - do you think this is achievable to am i barking up the wrong tree?
I am based in Nantwich, Cheshire so there are plenty of 'horsey folk' round here but i just wondered if anyone could advise if they think there'd be a sufficient market?

any feedback / thoughts / comments would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I know someone who had a business like the one you described. She had 2 x 3.5 ton horseboxes, both were brand new & top quality. They need to be really strong because of the abuse they will get. After about 12 months she sold one of the boxes & has kept the other which she rents out to people with her driving. The costs involved in self drive rental |& the potential abuse of the vehicle proved not cost worthy. She now picks up & delivers horses, takes some to shows & also has an ar4ranghement with local vets to be called upon if they need a horse brought to the surgery when the owner does not have transport. Now she makes some money.
You say you are in Nantwich & there are a lot of horsey folks. You need to assess if these horsey folks have their own lorries, in Cheshire I would imaging most probably do. If that's the case then your business plan is unlikely to work.

Cheshire is indeed very horsey, and quite affluent. You won't be far from Mustang equine transport, who have a fleet of 3 x 3.5t stallion boxes and who have a very good rep locally. I can't see how you can expect to return a profit on 2 x hire days a week.

ETA And you can expect your hire box to get a right hammerng in use.
