3.5 ton horsebox. Opinions on this one, and reccomendations please

I hired one of these afew times while my box was being built. My dad drove and it was quick, plenty of power, and a great handy size. He horses liked it, and travelled well. The small area at the rear was very handy aswell.

The one we hired was silver and blue, but silver and black would look mint.

I would of had one tomorrow but there not big enough.

Good friends of mine have just bought this box from Marlborough. I have an older Marlborough box. They are excellent. Very well built, good customer service. Highly recommended.

Its great to hear positive comments. I am worried though - why not big enough? Bruce would just about fit IMO - Have spoken to the guy.

looks fine but always go for the biggest engine as it will last longer working at a lower load, also make sure the suspension is uprated not just adjusted springs some companies weld blocks into the springs to stiffen them instead of replacing them. you will get both of these supposed extras free if you tell them your only buying one if they are - they might say no but i bet they will ring you before you get home if you walk away!

I had one before my trailer, love it, but watch your weight !

Silver and Blue all the way !

Also get the one with more head room, thay take over 17hh

Do you think I would be able to carry Bruce (who is a l/w wb) and a smaller horse (pony?)

How much horse would you be able to carry?

Thanks for the advice on the springs...I have no idea what you are talking about however I will ask...and then look confused when they come back with a technical reply!

I got a weight cert with mine so I knew exactly how much payload I have. Not sure what the newer ones weigh. But if you ring them they are very helpful. I can carry two medium sized horses in mine just fine.

My boy is over 17hh and is very long, he has plenty of space, but it does have the added head room on the top, also you wont lose much money on it too ! it was a Malborough 2 shape !

Loved it though, and very stable in high winds and overtaking lorries !

When i hired the one i did i was very naughty and travelled on 16hh and one 15hh. *runs and hide in corner, and waits to be shouted at*

Lovely boxes, but be VERY wary of extensive rust in these renault masters, the renault vans do seem to be very predisposed to just way too much rust.
Also my renault master cost a absolute bomb to keep going and to keep on the road, I may have just been v.unlucky with mine.

Marlborough are a very reputable company. Please be careful with your weight, my 3.5ton box has 1.2ton payload which is more than alot, I got pulled over the other day with my horse on and me, and my tack (2 saddles 2 bridles) 3x cooler rugs and a groming kit on board and only had 400kg to play with, not enoughfor another horse....my boy is a lw/mw 16.1hh....

they are nice boxes but you do need to be very carefull with the weight, we had a 15.1 and a 14.3 both lightweights and we were only just legal, when we got a 16hh horse she was ok on her own but was overweight with the 14.3 in as well. the problem isnt the height of your horse but the weight, we have moved to a 5 tonne lorry and we carry a 16hh and a 15.2 no problem. we had a VWLT35 and we now have a VWLT50, we are now having a 7.5 tonne lorry converted not because of weight issues but because we want more living, our lorry only has a small living area

I have one, had it for almost 2 years and been very pleased with it. Mine isn't a Marborough though and isn't a coach build. Mine is a conversion, I went for this option for a) money and b) weight, the conversions are much lighter. I have the extra head room on mine, it has 7' 12" which is just two inches smaller than most oakley boxes so surprisingly spacious.

Mine weights 2150kg empty, however I have only ever travelled one horse in it although I plan to be able to take my 15.1 Welsh x TB and my 16h LW mare together with minimal gear on board, should be fine.

A 17.3hh will be packing quite a bit of weight in there, I would say with a coachbuild (most average about 2300kg empty in my experience, however this was 2 years ago I was researching it) I would therefore say you would be pushing it to get anything other than a 14hh in with your large horse.

I can totally recommend them though, we've had other boxes in the past, including VW who everyone raves about but this has been the most faithful really, leave it for 3 weeks and it always starts first turn! As for the rust comment, I think that comes down to individual vehicles, in my experience the Fords are the worst rust bucket culprits!

A friend of mine had one built & he loves it. You must beware of the weight you are carrying though. Bare in mind you must take into account weight of driver, passengers, tack, fuel, water before you add up the weight of the horses you will be carrying.

I had one of these - a Renault Master and had no problems with it. My horse fitted in easily and he is 16.3. Would prob be over weight with 2 big uns in tho.
They are very easy to drive and perfect. I only got rid of mine because my new horse refused to go in it!
The only annoying this is the back fills up with hay if you feed yours while travelling. Also, not much room in the back if its raining.
Having said that, it was a great box, and my husband used to use it to tow the rally car...so a multi purpose vehicle which is always a winner!

Ive got a Marlborough Hunter, owned it about 3 years now, and its been perfect!! Im 25 and so am unable to drive a 7.5t and this has been a perfect solution. They look smart, are easy to drive, economical and the horses load and travel really well!! In fact i haven't had a horse yet who won't load onto it!! Weight wise i very rarely travel more than one so i haven't found this to be a problem. If you need any more info on them let me know but i have been really pleased with mine, would definitely recommend one!!

P.s im sure Black and silver would look great, my lorry is the one pictured in the middle of the Hunter page in champagne and red!!

I had one on a renault master body, it was seroiusly over weight and I got pulled. only thanks to the good grace of the man who pulled me did I get away with it, but I had to go home, take everything off then be re weighed. it was a fab little lorry though, just be seriously careful how much it weighs!!

They are fab little lorries but as everyone else has said you need to watch the weight. I am planning on getting one at some point but I think you would only be able to carry Bruce + tack and people which is why I'm only considering it!

Be careful with the Renaults as they are VERY expensive to fix if things go wrong but they are brilliant to drive
smile.gif
I know nothing about the rust issue but know they are painfully expensive for parts and servicing!

Can only repeat, watch the weight. A 1.2 ton load is not that great if you want to carry more than one horse, you can easily go over-weight. The upgraded 1.6 ton would give you more leeway though.

Have just had a shed load of work on my Merc Sprinter and mused to my mechanic buddy that I fancied one of these. He said to be very careful as above. They make pretty horse boxes but underneath there can be lots of trouble
