Hi I am looking for a 3.5 tonne horse box to be able to take my daughters new competiton horse out as it wont travel on trailer. I have seen one I like, a vauxhall movano, takes up to 18hh easily so plenty of room, with internal cupboard and under the seat chest, fitted saddle racks. 2005, but the catch is it has done 205,000 miles! Can anyone give me some advice on whether they would buy it or not or have similar experiences with a horse box with this many miles? The asking price is 9k but pretty confident I can get it for 8.25k
Thanks in advance

I dont know about horseboxes in particular but i do know that its generally accepted that vans are high mileage vehicles

Try to find out who owned it when it did those miles

A van used on long journeys for a big company will have done those miles on a motorway and have been regularly serviced

An ex builders van may have had a harder life

A courier van will probably have done a lot of stops and starts and driving in low gears round towns

So its not necessarily about the mileage but the way in which the miles were clocked up!

Get the weight checked on a Weybridge.
If you buy it get a new cam belt fitted.
Get a mechanic to check it out and also get the floor and ramp checked out.

Its been used as a self hire horse box, hence the high mileage, but guess that is why its a lot cheaper than it usually would be ...

The mileage is quite high, but if it has been used as a self hire box, hopefully it will have been well maintained.

Is it petrol or diesel?

I suppose it depends on how much you are going to use it - if just for a few local journeys I am sure it would be fine, but by adding further to the mileage may affect re sale value.

If this box isnt local to you check the advert out thoroughly, there are a few scams going around regarding 3.5t boxes at the moment!

Mine has done 265,000 miles on a 2004 plate. It was used as a professional horse transport vehicle, so was serviced every 8 weeks, and has the documentation to prove it.
Make sure you have full service history. Well maintained Diesel engines will do 300,000 miles no problem. As I only do about 2,000 miles per year, it should last!
