so - i currently have landrover freelander and one horse trailer. New horse far from keen to go on trailer - i am working daily with her to get her used to it - but thinking if she doesnt how many mpg do you get with a van conversion 3.5t box - prob renault master or peugeot boxer type conversions ..... mpg with horse and mpg without horse?

Do they do automatic gearbox ones? - I love my auto cars so much easier to drive cant understand why anyone would want manual!

any other advice appreciated on changing to 3.5t. only ever going to travel one horse so dont need to worry about payload. I would have to sell trailer and landrover so would have about 8-9k to spend would i get something decent - also have heard about breast bars needing to be removable ? as horses trying to jump into jockey area?

many thanks

My Renault Master 2.8TD does around 38-40mpg on a run and around 35ish on short journeys. No real difference without horse as I hardly use it without a horse on board!
They do autos but will be few and far between also IMO you get a smoother ride (for the horse) with careful manual driving and engine braking rather than just braking with an auto.

ive recently had a 51plate, new conversion renualt master, its great, really nice to drive, not sure bout mpgs but it wud be more fuel effecient than 4x4 and trailer as they are built to carry weight. the guy i ad mine off starts prices from £8500 from 2000plates onwards (newer vehicle increases price). mines bright pink, childish but i love it!! none of this lightweight **** either, they are properly and sturdy made to withstand the weight of a horse, or one who likes to kick alot!! mine has 7ft headroom, plenty for my 16.1hh and just over 1100kg payload. as for issues with breast bar/ goin into jockey area, as mine is a master conversion it still has the back doors to open so wud be easier to get the horse out shud that happen. he does do autos aswell.

if you pm me i can show you som pics and giv u his details, he is based in cheadle, staffs but delivers across the whole uk. =)

Not sure MPG but mine costs around £120 to fill up & I get about 500-600 miles from it?!? It's a Vauxhall Movano.

I looked into auto's but they were alot more expensive than manual so I didn't persue it.

Lots of people talk about horses jumping into jockey area but nothing I have ever travelled has attempted it, the breast bars are so high it would make it difficult. The maunfacturer I bought from has heard of it once where someone left there 3yo in it at a show, on it's own, with the back door & so it decided to exit! The back door on mine is about 3ft wide so you could squeeze them out if they did manage it!

I love mine it's just brill, I go out on my own confidently to shows etc..knowing I can manoevure it safely. Oh reversing camera is a must have when/if you start shopping for one!

thanks guys have pm'd you bonnie93 -

can i ask how do you stop hay going everywhere in the 'living' area????

Renault master. manufacturers quote 32 mpg combined.. A friend runs one as a work van he gets high twentys if he keeps his foot out of it about 20 if he hammers it so work on about 30 mpg and you wont be far wrong you will possbly use more fuel without the horse in it as its tempting to drive faster !!..you do a big mileage with your horses then ??? or are you thinking of useing it to run about in ? mileage we do it dosent matter ( mine is a 7.5 ton gets about 20 mpg) maybe we should get out more....

am interested in mpg as it would also act as second vehicle if i sell my landrover - so may have to get used just as a vehicle on occasions.

hay goes everywhere, lol! but i have a bench on the left side and a cupboard (without doors) thats nearly as high as the breast bar on the right. means i can have my tack and stuff underneath so it stays clean and the shelf is at a good height to put bucket on to bribe her with carrots lol!

i went on a trip at the wkend and my box happily cruised along the d road at 70mph, it was 40mile round trip, took 30mins each way and petrol gauge barely moved lol!
