those of you that have them do you wish you took the test so you could drive 7.5T so you had more choice and a bigger box. do they fill rocker than a bigger box? and what size horse do you have?
i did my test and have a 7.5t at the moment - but am down sizing as I only ever take one neddy at a time, and I only really have littlies anyway. I don't use the living at all - its lovely but unecessary. My mare is 15hh. It was a lot of money I spent to do my test (but I did a full hgv test as it was the same money) but it was worth it.
I took my test before the new rules came in, so can drive 7.5T. However, I've always stuck with 3.5T - had a Transit van conversion & now a Renault Master coachbuilt box. I love the 3.5T as so easy to drive & more manuverable, also don't need plating so much easier! I had loads of phonecalls / interest when I sold the 3.5T Transit last summer, so no worries about re-selling.
The Renault Master is brilliant to drive, just like a car - no rolling! But it cost more & is coachbuilt by a professional company - so I guess it depaends what your budget is??!
I can take 2 x 16.2h in the Renault Master. I have about 1100kgs payload so does depend on the horses.
I'm an 'oldie' so I can drive anything (not HGV).
I prefer the 3.5T over the 7.5T any day.
The coach built Renault Masters have a very low floor so they do not rock at all. The 3.5T is like driving a car and they are so easy to use, I wouldn't have a 7.5T.
I had 1100kgs payload so I could take 2 horses (depends on the weight of your horses obviously).
Good on fuel, easy to drive and easy to use.
The live-in is much smaller but the ease of use of the smaller lorry outweighed having a larger lorry.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
I am an oldie as well so can drive up to 7.5t without a test, I have had big fancy lorries in the past but now have a 3.5t VWLT35 with a George Smith 2 horse body. Will take up to about 16h but I would not like to have 2 that size in as it is slow enough with a couple of 15handers! It is so easy to drive and the horses travel really well in it, its well ventilated and has a vast Luton for Storage. We easily take 2 ponies eventing with 2 saddles each, bridles, boots, rugs etc etc etc, water and spare hay - you just have to be organised!
