I am looking at buying my own 3.5t horsebox as I am spending a ridic amount on hiring transport. Things like theault, marlboroughs etc are out of my price range but I have been looking at things like the vw lt35 etc and thinking it might be the way to go. I have a 16.3hh tb so tall but not that heavy and in all honesty will be transporting him on his own 99% of the time . Any one have any recommendations ??

Here's the builder of mine.

My actual box is gallery 1, although he is painted yellow now!!
Suspect prices have gone up since last year,as I had a very good deal, but mine would easily take a 16.3hh, as the head room is 7'8".
Chris, the box builder, had one on ebay a couple of months ago for about £14000, think was an 06 chassis if I recall correctly, but everything is negociable.( I piad alot less than that)
He will deliver or meet you somewhere, as he is based in Wales. As luck would have it, I was there on holiday so met up and brought it home then.
The build is fantastic, safe and sound.
If you can face trawling through my old posts, I put alot of info on boxes last year. Go for the maximum you can afford; there is alot of tat out there.I got a loan when I realised I couldn't get a decent box for the amount I had originally budgeted.
Polly from Travel two is also helpful:

I may be wrong but a lot of the lt vw's are converted for ponies, so may not have the height you require.
I second speaking to Polly form Travel two - I sold her my renault master which could take up to 17.2hh - it was converted very nicely, and although on a 'L' reg plate with 150,000 mileage on the clock, was 100% reliable and was sold for £6000.

I have a 3.5 tonne Renault Masta, with the 'big box' - like the Ocado delivery vans shape! My mare is a big 16.3 and she has plenty of headroom - I leave the partition out and let her travel sideways and she's fine. There's not much room in there to get around her lengthwise so you couldn't do anything inside.

Also note that you can only really travel one horse in them. The payload is only around 1.1 tonnes and that soon adds up - 100 litres of fuel is 100kg, plus you, plus anyone else, plus tack, water etc. and then 600kg or so of horse.

I have a 3 counties one that I am about to sell. Has been an agonising decision as I love it dearly and it has been the most reliable and easy to drive box, just need something with more living now.
I think the 3 counties ones are great and have a payload of about 1400, do be careful though as not all van conversions are equal. Friend bought one at the same time from another maker and has spent over 5k on engine repairs and needs to get the inside adjusted as layout is pants.

There is a new Renault master van and its vauxhall movano cousin just been launched so the horse boxes built on the old shape should be coming cheaper to make way for the new ones..

I am also looking at getting a VW, and a lot of people have very good things to say about them - I think there are few people on here that have the 'roomier' one that can fit a horse. I have seen the ones that are really only suitable for ponies though... I guess with any box though, you need to thoroughly check what you are buying.

I think you are right in that I need to go and have a look at some. I want to try and stay away from the conversions as last time I tried him in one he smacked his head as he went in and then refused to load again so I need a bit of head height :)

DWI is selling a 3.5t I think? I also know someone locally who makes 3.5t. He's always busy, reasonably priced and I've heard no bad reports. PM if you want contact details. :)
