3 Dogs Stolen

:( FFS, the more of this dog stealing im hearing of the angrier im getting, I et the owers are besides themselves. Do they have any ideas DG? I know yours are safe cos you never let them out of your sight:) but becareful.
Luckily my garden is completely enclosed with no access and when i let mine out they cannot even get onto the main garden they are locked in the patio right outside the back door and my kennels have (mesh roofs). But im getting rather concerned about the rise in dog thefts, I bet they are getting sold on for a poxy amount of money (or worse):(

Oh gosh poor owners.
The number of thefts seems to be on the rise.
I think ill be getting a pad lock on our gates now. Although i rarely let him out without keeping an eye- its so scary to think they can go from the garden.
Will encourage my mum to lock her gates too as her dog does lie out a lot.

I think you are all sounding just a bit paranoid ! There are millions of dogs in this country, the vast majority of adult dogs have no value at all and there are 100's of unwanted dogs killed every week as no one wants them.....why would anybody steal your dog ?

Believe what you want these dogs were stolen, being local Im in the loop and Im not going on an open forum telling you what I know, its in the dogs interest to keep stoom. Also quite a few dogs are being stolen in burglaries all documented hardly paranoia. Dog fighting is on the increase and they get through bait dogs pretty quick, so far free to good homes have probabley satisfied this but any unattended dog is not going to be ignored, read Caylas post dog stolen at knifepoint.

Cayla its all very worrying and the incident late one night when I found that vehicle parked on the back drive and Darcy ran towards it and stood on guard. Im convinced they were after scrap and someone was going to have a snoop around the farm. You are right about me not letting them out of my sight even when they are in the garden but I dont think you can be too careful.

I'm not saying no dogs are ever stolen, of course they are just that it's very paranoid to think it's going to happen to your dog out in your garden or on a walk ....ask yourself why anyone would want your dog ? A pedigree puppy could be a target as they have a value but not an adult pet.

The 3 dogs stolen are not pedigree and are adult, bait dogs do not need a pedigree, if this warning stops another dog being stolen then thats a good thing. It dosnt hurt for people to be forewarned and have a plan of action ready in the unlikley event it happens to them.

People will hand over money for mutts so even a quick £50 would suit the scum.
While people will hand over money for dogs scum will steal them. Five Tibetan terriers were stolen last December. The last one had been sold for a couple of hundred quid to someone as a Shih Tzu.

Others get used for breeding and some get used as bait.

Anyone who buys a dog without proper documentation could be fuelling the trade.

It is on the increase. You never really used to hear about dog thefts but now I hear more and more stories. At the other end of the scale, the dogs that are being dumped, tied to trees, thrown up is also increasing. If someone is warned and doesn't lose their dogs then posts such as these are well worth it. As an example, as I have 3 staffords, I never leave them in the car unattended and my house is secure.

There are literally 1000's of staffies and staffy x's looking for homes, why would anyone go out of their way to steal yours ?

Because generally dog rescue's won't let you have them free or for bait dogs. Much easier and less traceable to steal them from a parked car/unattended garden and bury them when done with!

The internet is full of free dogs if you really believe lots of dogs are used as bait dogs, which I don't. Why risk committing a crime to take someone's pet ?

I'm not saying they are ALL taken as bait dogs but personally I would rather steal an unattended dog than rock up to someone's house and give my name/address/phone number and the possibility that they have my car reg and am then traceable IF I wanted to use a dog for immoral purposes.

Recently on a Facebook page that I frequent there was a lady asking about all the dogs free to good homes, regardless of breed/size, it turns out she had collected several from owners and was looking for more as she really wanted a dog but her last one was PTS, she used this reason with lots of people and was then banned from the site but 2 very upset people would like to know what happened to their dogs. Hopefully she sold them on to good homes for a profit..................:(

There is a market for other people's loved pets.
If you had the choice between a free Staffie x on gumtree, usually with no basic training or manners or (for example) Luci07's very well behaved, perfect example of the breed, very well trained proper Staff which is sitting in the car outside a newsagent which one would you go for.
Selling on a free dog off the Internet will be hassle and not make much money. Nicking a desirable dog is much more lucrative.

If I wanted a bailt dog I wouldn't care how well trained it was ! If I wanted an adult pet dog then I would go to a rescue...the only dogs that would be profitable to steal would be pedigree pups and they are only worth money while they are still at the cute stage. Thieves are looking to steal things that are easy to sell on, your mobile phone is a zillion times more likely to be a target than your dog .....

EXACTLY THIS^^^ The thieves are atleast looking for a pet dog, good example, a fluffy cutie or a pedigree or a lurcher or something good or a bait dog. So nothing is safe, but it sure is easier to steal a dog than go through gum tree or pay even a small ee from a pound or rescue, esp if given order for dog and specific breeds/descriptions. Look at the female pointer coaxed into the van!
In turn then big REWARD money comes from stealing well bred or much loved pets.

Not to mention the fact that it is much quicker and easier to grab an unattended animal than to bother going to the rescue, going through the hassle of convincing them you aren't an animal abusing scum bag etc etc etc...

Dog theft seems to be increasing every day, it's disgusting. A couple of aforementioned scum bags tried to steal our dog from our garden when she was nine months old. Luckily I spotted them and they spotted me and scarpered. Obviously not well seasoned dog pinchers. We now have CCTV up and never leave our dog unattended.

When I was a kid my friend had her pet rabbits stolen out of her front garden to blood lurchers with. There are always scuzzbuckets about. Dog fighting is a HUGE moneymaker through gambling.

There was also a huge non-static encampment in the same area where a lot of dogs ended up. People will steal dogs and turn them around for a quick £50 - if you're after booze or drugs, that's a nice little earner.
Trained gundogs especially are a huge earner.

You say: If I wanted a bait dog I wouldn't care how well trained it was ! If I wanted an adult pet dog then I would go to a rescue...t
Yes, because you are a normal law abiding person, there are plenty out there who are not.

My dogs are never out of my sight.

Can't be too careful these days.

OP I really hope the dogs are found as its the most distressing thing ever not knowing whats happened.
