mine was literally sat on at easter, has spent the summer at grass and this month has been rebacked.
He's mainly just longreining at the moment, in the next week or 2 he will start going on some short hacks.
If they are young mares we bred from them as 3 year olds and if we decided to put them into sport, we would then back them as 4 year olds. We only keep mares and the occasional stallion prospect.......so if anything else I would hope to have them sold before this stage.
Mine was backed at the beginnning of the year, got on him for the first time in a few months today and he was a star, will now be worked 3 times a week for short seeions to prep. for the 4 y/o classes next year. Some of my owners 3y/o's are now in full work and having lessons etc, i just wanted to take my own one a bit slower as the pressure to perform isnt there!!
My 3yo was supposed to be backed this summer but was too busy with stud duties, so is just starting now. Will be ridden very lightly over the autumn, then start doing a bit more in the new year - don't want to put too much pressure on as he is still growing, but but he does need something to occupy his over-active mind.
So far (just started lunging/long-reining) he thinks it's all one big game and loves it, providing there isn't too much repetition. Typical Arab attitude, very low boredom-threshold (e.g. "What do you MEAN trot round in a circle??? - I just DID that! TWICE! Now I'm going to do something DIFFERENT - like maybe practice my nought-to-sixty acceleration and handbrake turns...")
Thats good to hear! Quite a few people at my place seem to be doing alot with their 3 year olds, i think in preperation for the 4 year old classes next year, every night i go down they say, you not getting on her? I have just started to ride her about 3 times a week, 20 mins in either indoor or outdoor school or more than likely take her out on a short hack round the village which she finds much more interesting being the extremely nosey mare that she is, plus when she is having a growth spurt (she is now) she feels unbalanced so i don't want to push her.
I also read Hubertus Schmidt's interview in which he says he makes a point of never riding a horse until it is 4 years old?
I have to say I much prefer to break a 4y.o than a 3y.o, they're that bit more balanced (even for a baby) and able to take your weight better, also more mature mentally too.
I'm doing one for YO - he was backed mid July, and I started on him on August 5th. He can walk, trot, and canter - in a loose outline and he is hacking out in company and alone. We worked him quite hard for about a month, but now the pressure is off, and he is just going for short hacks as and when I can ride.
I doubt he will get turned away, but merely will be doing a bit of hacking over the winter once or twice a week over the winter.
Mine was sent up to my instructors to be ridden away in June (though she had me onboard within 5 days!). Since then we have just been quietly hacking out and gone to a few inhand shows.
So Im exactly where I hoped to be - I have a happy, healthy 3 yo who hacks out quietly and confidently in company and alone
She'll keep going for a month or 2 while the weather permits and then will have a few months off over the worst of the winter and then more hacking at the start of 08 with a gentle introduction to schooling, hopefully with the aim of doing a little prelim stressaging next spring/summer!!
hi just read your thing on 3yr olds. Mine is 3 and a half and has just been backed literally the oast 3 weeks... now long reining and on short hacks- hopefulyl turning him away over xmas. ready for age classes next year...
