My 33yr old mare is acting different to her usual behaviour. She is off her food, wandering the paddock, calling out to horses next paddock.
Could she be on heat at her age? We are in Australia where it is early summer.

No, we live a long way out of town and from past experiences have not found a good equine vet. Having said that I definitely would get a vet if she seems to be in pain. Just unusual behaviour.

Does she have company in her paddock? Horses are herd animals and need company of their own, close enough to interact with (not over a fence). Does she have shelter, is she drinking?

You need to find a vet, as when you own animals you need a vet! Better to research and find one before you need one urgently.

That being said, absolutely any chance in behaviour needs investigation, especially if she is off her food. Any change in behaviour needs investigating, if she continues to not eat you need the vet out ASAP.

Yes I will, still wondering if she could be in season. There is a stallion in the neighbours place and a mare in season. I’m wondering if there is something in the air.

Yes. There is plenty of grass in the paddock at the moment and I do see her grazing. Also this morning she did eat a small amount of her “Old Timers”
Thanks everyone for responding.
