Well, today, after much soul searching I took a horse to the 'blood bank'. Well, it's fantastic! The horse will be in quarantine for two weeks but kept within sight of his potential mates. After two weeks he will be put in with four or six buddies before being put out into the herd.

The herds are on 1000 acres divided into fields. Herd are between 50 and 70 horses. It was amazing to see the horses living a normal life. All look in fantastic condition and very content.

I am now very happy I have made the right decision and a very big thank you to a member on here who brought this place to my attention. From what I've seen today she can rest assured her horse is living a brilliant life. Many of the horses there have been there for years and are now 25-30 years old. All the horses have some sort of problem that isn't pain related and, IMO, their owners have done the best thing for them.

I'm very relieved!

It's an equine 'blood bank'. They collect blood for transfusions, research and, which is most of their clientele, agar disks. If something has to be cultured, you know, in a dish, it's on horse blood apparently.

Well, that sounds good - I was under the impression, after posts on here, that they PTS horses at about aged 15.

Yes, I was concerned about that, but definitely not, if the horse is healthy they are guaranteed good herd living until they drop. I have this from the horse's mouth as it were and I'm welcome to keep in touch.

I think the confusion may be that they won't be accepted after age 15.

I buy horse blood from a catalogue for using in school science experiments, I assume it is from the blood banks.

Sounds like an ideal 'retirement' for horses whose ridden career is over, better than some of the alternatives. Good on you.

Slightly foxed - would you be able to pm me the details of the blood bank you sent your horse to. Considering it for one of mine. Was there a wait list?

Many thanks.

I will, of course pm you, however the place I sent my horse to has had their quota of horses this year, they take new horses in the spring so that they are settled in their herd environment by the winter. If you are able to wait until next spring it will be an option. I'll pm you the number now, he' always v busy but if you leave a message explaining you understand about the situation he will get back to you. Perhaps others on here will know of other places too.
