Can somebody please explain to me why the decision was made to move all higher level 3 day events to the short format? I wasn't old enough/interested enough to take full notice when it happened!!!!

All the articles I can find make small references to horse welfare and bringing them into line with inernational competition but I can't find a definitive on why it came about?

Do some lower level events still run long format?

Thank you in advance!!!

Well you have sucessfully made me feel old! lmao In my head short format only happened last year!

Anyway, I heard it was part horse welfare (although many just say the traditional fittening methods were lost) and part it opens up more venues to hold events due to not needing as much space. I don't know of any events that run long format. Its a shame because it's changed the sport, the warmbloods are creaping in and its getting too technical. I really used to enjoy watching the steeple chase and now were have totally lost the endurance phase which was half the point! BUT then again, horses do seem to be lasting longer now.....

From what I understood it was due to lack of space at World, and Olympic venues for the two roads and tracks sections that led to the R&T and steeplechase being taken out. The costs of building facilities for these sections were prohibitive
