Just seeing the bhs thread reminded me that my membership is up for renewal. I'm a happy hacker these days due to back problems and only after the 3rd party cover ESP as iv got a couple of youngsters to back next year and they will be long reining round the lanes. I'm not bothered about the mag I just want 3rd party for all the horses I ride/own. Anybody know if there's cheaper about now?

Go back to original thread and read a response to one of my comments there. Seems there isn't cheaper if you want legal & personal too

I have to have £10 million liability cover to ride in the local country park, so I've been shopping around:

British Showjumping supporter membership is £29 and includes public liability insurance (£30m).

British Dressage supporters membership is £42 and includes public liability, personal accident and legal helpline.

World Horse Welfare champion plus membership is £52 and includes public liability (£10m) and personal accident (£15k).

Hope that helps! ;)

Mmmmm.... I remember posting last year asking why people opted for the BHS Gold membership instead of the others you've listed above which seemed to offer more cover (3rd party-wise) for a cheaper cost, and there was a very good reason. I'm tired ATM and not thinking straight so cannot remember the ins and outs, but I'm sure someone will post the reasons here shortly. I'll try and find my old post!

Edited: Yep, found it! Here's the link - http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=484232&highlight=Insurance

It's the excess imposed.

I looked into this last year when I became a BD member as I thought I might be able to cancel my BHS membership, but when I spoke to the insurers underwriting the BD insurance you were only covered if you or someone with permission from you was leading or riding your horse. So if your horse got lose from the field and caused damage / an accident you weren't covered - eek :D I know BD's insurers have just changed so maybe worth double checking and it certainly wasn't obvious from their key facts document.

Please remember that if your are a BHS Gold Member not only do you get the 10 million pound third party insurance cover but you get use of their free legal help line and you are supporting the Access (Bridleways) , Road Safety and Welfare work done by the British Horse Society.

BD excess is £500 and WHW is £250, both of which only apply to property damage, not bodily injury. TBH I've found a £250 excess on property damage seems to be standard on all the horse insurance policies I've looked at anyway.

I agree with Peter but would add that you will be supporting an organisation that may well be benefiting you in the longer term by working in the background on "Access (Bridleways), Safety and Welfare work"
