Four horses were killed in a fire sparked during a botched burglary at stables in Walkern Stevenage Hertfordshire this morning.

Police said thieves attempting to break into a metal container to steal a quad bike at a stable yard off Bennington Road, Walkern, Stevenage Hertfordshire started a fire that ripped through adjoining buildings.

The emergency services were alerted shortly after 1.30am to the blaze. Three fire crews fought the flames, but were unable to save four horses.

East Herts Police Inspector Chris Hunt said: “This is a very distressing incident and we are currently working with the fire service to establish the exact cause of the fire. A full police investigation is also underway.

“Although the stables are in a remote location we are appealing to anyone who was in the area and saw anything suspicious to contact us immediately, or anyone who may information which will help this investigation.”

If you can help, call Inspector Hunt via 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

One of the ponies was the amazing Parkdene Music Man a truly outstanding coloured pony only just coming into his own.

RIP ponies my thoughts are with Jenna the owner of the stables and everyone associated with the ponies

That is so sad, I had heard about it locally too, how so blooming wicked 4 horses over a quad. I hope they catch the scum bags murderers that did this. Truely tragic. RIP poor ponies.
Thinking about the poor owner. So sad. Someone must know who did it.

Hope they catch the low life and the Judge gives jail time and very large fine.
Also if they own pets have them removed to new homes, life ban on owning an animal of any kind. Have to ask yourself did they know that they started fire and do nothing to help horses.
