in a couple of weeks time we need to get four horses transported quite a long way (4 hours ish) to a horseball tournament in the midlands. In an ideal world we'd hire a large lorry - that would come with a driver (none of us have HGV licenses) and we'd have it on site at the tournament place for the weekend then he/she's drive us home after...

Unfortunately though the only quote i've managed to get for this is £1,000 which seems rather a lot!

Does anyone know of any transport ppl in greater london/essex (we're in east london) that I could try instead?

the alternative might be taking them two-by-two with us driving instead of a hired driver, but even then on my license I could only drive a 3.5ton box and a) i've never driven one before... and b) I think it would probably gross over 3.5tonnes with two 15hh middleweight cobs + tack+feed+ comeptition stuff etc etc

Any ideas? I'm starting to panic now!!

Contact the tournament organisers? Maybe they have had experience of this sort of dilemma before and can offer you some advice or put you in contact with some transporters. One assumes that you don't need the driver all weekend? That means they have to get back from the site when you arrive and get back in time for leaving - all of which costs.

Thanks ChicoMio - will do that and see what they say. These days I just expect solutions to everything to pop up instantly when you google it... so when it doesn't I panic!

How many people with driving licenses are going? If there are 3, you could hire two 3.5 tonne boxes (I think you can get them for about £100/day), plus one additional driver in a large car / 4x4 with all the stuff. Alternatively if you don't have enough drivers and you really don't mind doing all the driving you could take 2 horses at a time and come back for the next 2. But with 2 horses in a little box I would definitely take a car for the other people and tack etc.

If doing 2 at a time in this way try to balance out the weight (take the heaviest and lightest horse together, and the middle 2 together) and don't take anything in the box you don't need - keep water to a minimum. And don't take passengers, put them in the car. Knowing there is someone behind you in a car with everything else is reassuring.
