Do you just have groenendaels then? Have to say I see a few of these and Tervuerens but have never seen the other two. I assume the laekenois is quite rare in this country.

I love BSD. Police over here are starting to use them more than GSD as the breeding of GSD is getting out of hand and they're either useless or something not right in their head

Interesting, Thankyou.

Are they "related" to German Shepherds or is the slight similarity merely coincidental as it were? Doesn't Tia have a black Malinois?

I only breed Groens but have had Grey Tervs pop up in my litters ! - the Malinois ( smooth coated) is now becoming very popular and you are right - the Laekenois is very rare - even in Belgium

Not related to the GSD now but way back all the European Shepherding breeds ( the Dutch, German and Belgian Shepherds) stemed from the same source -they are now three quite distinct and separate breeds - interestingly the Longhaired variety of German Shepherd is not acceptable according to the breed clubs but the longhaired varieties of Belgian Sheperd are !

(whispers) ......black Malinois are incorrect
shocked.gif
to get this colour they must cross a Malinois with a Groenendael ...a BIG no no in the breed !....I'm sure Poppy is lovely though but I hope you got a discount for an incorrect colour

"Are they all yours? "

I wish

...no the grey Terv is from my last litter - the Groen is Bijou's dad (not owned or bred by me ) and the Mal and Laek are owned and bred by friends in the breed.

I've always had my suspicions that her mother may infact have been doing some meddling with the neighbouring Afghan hound...............

I know we've had this conversation before and since that I have done a tonne of research and there seems to be an awful lot of these incorrect black malinois all over the world. The weirest thing that I found was that the Belgian Kennel Club apparently have no problems with registering black malinois
crazy.gif
and I found an excerpt from Louis Huyghebaert http://www.belgiandogs.org which seems to say that it is possible?

I found a lot of suggestions that pre-1970's there were many black malinois but when the breed standard changed, they were no longer accepted in black.

All way too confusing to me though, LOL! There is a lady locally to me who is breeding silver tervs, are these accepted? I quite like them too.

'Silver' Tervs are probably greys - this is one of the two accepted colours in Tervueren- the other being red - look at the head shot of myTerv picture - it is indeed a pale grey ( silver ) Tervueren.

Many years ago when the breed was being developed black short haired dogs did turn up in Malinois litters - but these were not accepted for registration and whilst I know that some working lines deliberately breed for this colour (usually by outcrossing to Groens) they cannot be classified as pure Malinois - although they are pure BSD ! - confusing I know

.

Having said all this I am approaching the breed from a purist point of view - the fact remains that Poppy is 100% BSD probably with a touch of Groen in her and this accounts for her fabulous temperament ( Groens in my opinion have the best character of all the varieties

) and I bet you'll have another !.

Oh in a shot! Yes once my old collie pops her clogs (hopefully not for a few years though) the next dog will indeed be another BSD.......might even go for one of the blue ones this time
