I had managed to miss this completely somehow, having assumed that the LEZ (London Emission Zone) only applied to Lorries but it also applies to 4 x 4 registered before 1st Jan 2002. The Zone is a lot larger than you would think (so near me, comes down as far as Chessington) and there are cameras already up. It costs £100 to drive in the zone and considerably more if you forget or didn't know..

I have just managed to slide in with my 4 x4 but thought I should share this as I had completely managed to bypass this and would have been highly unimpressed if I had been caught out.

Lets hope you don't get anything in the post x

Did you check if your vehicle is exempt? I just checked mine and it is :) (thanks for the alert though) It appears that it is the bigger diesel ones that get clobbered.

You need to check yours too D_D_D as it depends on engine size with some of them! Seems semi 'pot luck' what is and isn't allowed in!

My Sister's OH seems to think that by changing his Shogun's classification on his log book from a 4x4 utility vehicle to a 3 door estate that it will exclude his car.
I have my doubts knowing the greedy government , my Maverick wasn't exempt and I doubt by changing my logbook to a 3 door estate would change it's exemption status.
My Mum's VW camper (2001) is not exempt either, luckily neither of us usually go into that area BUT I need to go to Costco for business now and again which is just inside the zone, so I'm stuffed!
Any thoughts on this "changing the logbook trick", I have read on some of the Shogun forums that alot of the owners are going down this route, do you think it will work for other types of vehicles if at all?
I'm sure someone out there is in the know?
Oz :)

I have a 1998 disco, and mine is "not subject to LEZ"

Thats interesting. I thought all 4 x 4's registered before 2002 were!

I double checked - mine is a 2002 and is OK. I sometimes go up to London in it if I need to collect both nephews etc so would have been mega annoyed if I had been clobbered. Looks like I am OK for next year too but think a few people will fall foul. The zone is pretty big so do feel for equestrian centres that are just inside the zone as this must impact them. Previously I remember that the YO had to fish around to borrow a trailer to collect a horse from Chessington as she would have been hit for the extra £100 if using her lorry!

DO keep going back every so often and re checking because my 1998 Maverick was not subject to LEZ as well, then suddenly when I re checked it some months later it was!
They sneak it in so do keep re checking as it is a hefty fine if you get caught out!
Oz :)

Well if your driving around London on a daily basis, why would you want a 4x4 anyway???

That is really quite a stupid question... the LEZ covers GREATER London which is actually a long way out from central London and there are a lot of us who could get caught just by driving locally!! and as someone who has family living in central London, the days of the Chelsea tractor are pretty much long gone.

My thoughts entirely!

Great tip re using the online checker - I just checked and my 3.5T horsebox is exempt. I'd assumed I would be caught automatically (probably didn't read up on it like I should have.....)

I have to say Living inside the Emmision Zone what the OP has stated is total rubbish.

Sorry - what????? did you actually BOTHER to read my original post?? it was a warning to 4 x 4 drivers, of which equine folks form a large number, to check that they don't fall foul of this. How is that total rubbish? or don't you think that any 4 x 4's are included? because please feel free to go and look at the official website if you think I am making this up!

When I put in the vehicle plate details for my 1998 Trooper it wasn't subject to the charge but it recommends checking the flowchart thing as well and when I did that it will be from 3 Jan 2012. I don't live in the zone but often travel through it, that's a bit of a pain actually. Seems like we're all living under a never ending cosh at the moment :(

I was totally unaware of this. Thank for flagging it up, OP.

I have just checked my 2001 CRV and it says it's fine now and after Jan 2012.

ETA: My car is petrol and it seems to only apply to diesel.

Just spoken to my garage and they were under the impression that it was only for commercial vehicles. 4x4's that are classed as cars are unaffected.

Thats not what the site says and not what some of the earlier posters have found either. This is what the site says

"It doesn't matter whether your vehicle is used for commercial or private purposes - it will still need to meet the standard's"

Its definately worth logging on and checking - if I remember rightly, someone on a different post had been clobbered with £200 for failing to pay for the £100 normal fee (was driving a lorry).

Here is the link anyway so for anyone who wants to check..

I just checked my 54 plate 2.8CRD diesel Jeep Cherokee

By numberplate it says "09 Jun 2011 to onwards Not Subject to LEZ

By car type it says "You are affected by the Low Emission Zone but already meet the emissions standards now and in 2012".

Clear as mud - Personally I'm glad I checked both as I think it would be very easy for someone to just check the registration number and assume that they were fine.

this is true, but you also need to read this

"Light 4x4 utility vehicles classed as cars are not affected by the LEZ. Those classed as commercial vehicles are subject to the LEZ. This can be found on a VSC registration certificate under 'Body Type.'"

On my V5C the body type is classed as an estate, so indicating that this is going to be fine.

It is very very confusing and I can see a lot of problems with this one, especially since a filter is over £2000...... oh well, it doesn't look like I will be going to work in the new year:rolleyes:

Thankfully I dont live near London but whatever next :mad:. This country just gets worse. I remember the really bad winter when friendly 4 x 4 drivers ferried nurses etc arround, then they slap this on the drivers.

Mine isn't classed as a light utility...oh well, as you say, I can see this causing problems/confusion and a few people caught out - particularly if you tend to switch off and think "its London"..!!

4x4's won't be affected for the majority of people - its just those that are registered as vans etc.

For example - we used to have a Fourtrak (1996 plate - 2.8 diesel) and that would have been compliant. (we live in the 'zone' and use it to tow my trailer)

I sold it last year then just before the winter bought another fourtrak - but this one has only 2 seats and is registered as a van (we bought it from a landscape gardener) - its compliant at the moment, but won't be after 2012 so we'll have to sell it at the end of this summer. Its a real pain as its a great car and was a real bargain :(

Well we have a P reg Mitsubishi Pajero LWB 2.8 4 x 4 which will be NON LEZ Compliant in Jan 2012.... so how does that work out???

You need to check on your v5 document what your car body is.... if it is estate or car or the like, the indications are that you will be ok, if you have something other than car, then indications are that you will be affected.
