Hi Guys !

So yeah title says it all really I have a 4 year old who has been broken for about 8 months but ridden on slowly she will walk trot canter and slow down transitions I can have her galloping in a field and bar the bucks or excitement she will slow to a walk with light pressure to but it's just stopping really she will stop but she doesn't want to stand for like more than a second ! and sometimes is she is pretty " fresh " shall we say she will like put her head up and bit and i suppose evade the bit a little ? or maybe thats her response to preassure. So how can I stop this ? I have tried like stopping her and as soon as she stop release preassure but she just heads straight off again ! :( Do I just need to repeat repeat repeat or are there any other exercises/things I can try ? And thanks guys ! :)

I've had a similar issue with my youngster, halts were more like very brief pauses! I've found that repitition is the answer with lots of praise when she does stand but no pressure to keep her still- so don't worry about her strolling off. I've found that forcing the issue when they are stressed just creates tension, making it even more impossible (and in my case causing reversing!!).
Another method that I've found really works and may be worth starting with is having a friend walk round by your horse's shoulder, then when you ask for halt they also stop and make a fuss of your mare. This should help her relax when standing and see it as a relaxing thing to do.
Good luck :)

Well if your having issues like this then I suggest you dont jump yet (as you seem to have posted a thread on that a short while ago) as your flat work isnt strong enough to jump yet. Its a very basic evasion and I suggest you get an instructor in to help you with the flat work.
