Have seen an Isuzu Trooper with very high mileage, an old Jeep or various Freelanders. What would you buy with 4k? It won't be our main family car, just for towing two ponies/one pony one horse.

I would steer clear of the freelanders, I know of a few people who had problems with them. Personally I would prefer a Trooper, as they are meaty enough to get you off the slipperyist of show grounds. :D
Personal preference though x

Probably a landrover discovery, my Dad got an older one this year and it is amazing. Our freelander towed my 14.1 on his own no problem but we needed something bigger to tow my youngster as he's huge! You could probably get quite a good disco with 4k aswell.

You should try and get a Mitsubish Shogun (not the Sport) the SWB.. theres one or 2 on eBay for about £4k.. even with higher mileage the 3.2 is amazing wouldnt get anything else now!!

Thank you ROG. I am going to have to do my B and E as I passed my test after 1997, OH will drive it until then.

for gods sake dont get a freelander still have nightmares about mine!! I have a shogun which is great, good old workhorse, juicy but only used for towing and the station run. Pulls trailer and horse very easily, good luck

Firstly apologies for taking this a little off topic :(

If you only need it to tow one horse then it can be done on a B licence with the right vehicle and trailer set up
If that is your intention then I can assist further with what you need to look for :)

If you still are going for B+E then this will be useful -

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

Many will find that passing the once in a lifetime B+E test is their best option so here is some info on that test:-

The B+E test
No medical or theory test required
Read a number plate from a certain distance
VIDEO - Show Me Tell Me Questions - usually 5
The next three can be in any order:-
VIDEO - Reversing Exercise (old measurements) - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
VIDEO - Uncouple/couple up - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
One hour road drive - includes the independent drive and is done virtually the same as the basic car test

DISCLAIMER - I have no connection to any companies which may be featured in those videos

Well, at the moment we only have one 13.2hh NF pony, and the pressing issue is getting him to Pony Club Rallies! So any advice you can give me on what we may need to just tow him so that I can tow alone would be brilliant!

BUT I am looking for a horse for me so that I can do fun rides and small shows so eventually we'd have to have something that could pull two OR we may get another small pony for my younger children.

Just wish I had an unlimited budget so I could go and buy a brand new Disco and an Equitrek trailer :D *never going to happen*

ANSWERED HERE in post number 525 :D

We have a a 1999 Isuzu Trooper

We have owned it for approx 8 years now and it has had a hard life but still going strong. It has pulled our 16.2hh Irish draught mare in an ancient heavy Rice trailer, pulled trailer loads of concrete, pulled trees out and pulled many other 4x4's out of the muck!!!

My husband will cry when this old girl finally gives up the ghost because he knows he'll never get anything else that pulls like it.

Come highly recommended by us.

Nissan Terrano would fit the bill nicely. Would pull a house let alone a couple of horses; we don't even know our trailer's hitched it's so easy and they seem to be reliable and go for years too which is always a bonus.

This was posted in the HHO towing clinic thread today -

I just wanted to say thank you ROG for all the information you keep updating on the towing rules.

I taught myself and took the towing test using my own 4x4 and horsebox a few years ago and only failed on the emergency stop, which I found out last year had been scrapped for the independant drive! After seeing the reverse area had downsized from one of your posts I decided to find an instructor (I could not face taking my own rig around the city centre again and have a lot of naughty driving habits I needed to iron out) and get the test done again before anything else changed and thankfully passed last week :)

My own little rig which I towed on a B license (shortwheel base Fourtrak and downrated Cheval Liberte 1003) will soon be getting sold and replaced with a larger set-up :)

I am selling my 02 Trooper and Equi Trek Trail Treka together for £8K as going back to a lorry. Trooper long wheel base with 70K (approx ) Trailer new two years ago and had ponies in 6 times. It takes up to 17.2.

Steer clear of the Jeeps or Freeloaders!!!!

Shogun/Trooper would be my preference followed possibly by Hilux or Terrano

We have an L reg disco and I t is great!! It will tow two horses is reliable, spacious and hardy. We bought it just for towing but like it so much that we sold our other car and it now does us proud on the school run as well! we went to a one day event at the weekend and I must confess to a smug moment as almost everyone else needed a tow off the field and the trusty one did not even blink !!
