Hi all! Firstly can I wish you all a really lovely Xmas and New Year! :)

I am looking for a little advice please? My HORRENDOUS Freelander has just been declared terminal! Yes, I know I know, should never have gotten one in the first place, but have only really tootled around locally pulling 1 pony...

Anyway, am now considering a Nissan Terrano 2.7 TD LWB, and was wondering if any of you had any opinions on this car - in particular the fact that I will also have to use it as my "every day" car. Is the fuel consumption horrendous? Pulling power/maintenance costs etc?

Any advice, help most welcome!! :)

No idea about the Nissan (though I believe they are reliable).

I have a Disco (about eight/nine years old now I think). Not at all fuel efficient (diesel), but it can tow and its handling in the snow and ice has been brilliant :D. I've towed all sorts of cars out of my client's carpark the last few days, plus pulled a big horse lorry out of deep mud, and towed two mahhosive horses up and down hills all quite happily :D. I do one hundred and sixty miles a day, so it's not too bad as a commuting car (fuel aside!).

My dad has the terrano 55 plate....not a bad car at all,if you stay away from sport models dont think fuel consumption is to scary(but tbh,any 4x4 of a decent engine capacity is going to cost you to run, especially how fuel prices are atm :( )
I have a 10yr old Disco, costs me a fortune,in more ways than one...but in all this weather we have had, dont begrudge her a penny of it...awesome machine, felt as safe as houses and she has ploughed through some snow :) x

Thanks hadfos :-) in fairness, my freelander only really gave me around 27mpg, so as long as my next one isn't TOO much thirstier, I will be happy.

I have a 53 plate SWB Terrano, and think its great... very reliable, tows very well, as an SWB its easier to reverse with trailer than LWB. It also has a very good towing capacity compared to many vehicles. Its the 2.7 base model, and although I never worked it out accurately, fairly sure it does more than 27mpg, although maybe not much more...
The one thing 'd say is that its been great in the snow, but a 4x4 slides on ice just the same as any other vehicle...

Thank you :-) its actually a 53 plate i have been looking at, but it's the 2.7 TD Sport, however the handbook says 28mpg combined, so if that's right it shouldn't be a million miles off my petrol Freelander?

we have a nissan xtrail it was brilliant in all the snow we have just had, mpg is really good both everyday driving and towing, can only legally tow 2 tons which isnt a prob for us as only tow small pony anyway.

Hell, I have a newish Freelander and was going to recommend it, then saw you post!!! Before I had a W reg Izusu Trooper, 3 litre. It could tow like a dream, also cheap to buy. I sold her for £2,500 with the rest of her life in front of her.

I have a Discovery and Love it! Its a 300tdi and since owning in i have become a geek with keeping track of how much fuel i am using... I filled it up a few weeks back for £108.80... and i did 410 miles until the light came on and i filled up again (i tend to fill up as soon as the light comes on) I dont think its bad on fuel at all really compared to some?

Had a ford maverick and loved it repaced with nissan xtrail which also love and better on mpg, tow 506 and 16.3 with it and no problems

Izusu troopers are the best, but in fairness, terrano's are well up there. they take hardship!!!

I've got a Terrano SWB and it's brilliant - its a P reg so the fuel isn't brilliant  but its better than my friends newish (abt 5yrs old) defender. Tows an ancient old Rice trailer with my horse in it really, really well :) I can't afford to run two cars so its main vehicle and apart from a few problems you would expect with a vehicle that age its been brilliant :)

Heya,

I have a Ford Maverick, which is basically a Nissan Terrano but has a ford badge it has the same body shape, same engine etc.

I love it, its cost me a minimal amount of money to maintain and does about 29mpg it is brilliant in the Ice and snow as well.

It tows really well, infact you may forget that you have a trailer on the back lol it depends on whether you get a short or long wheel based model on how much you can tow though.

Look at this - http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/summary.aspx?model=606&page=3

I hope this helps.

I have just replied to JanetGeorge'sn post in CR about this but forgot to add that my Forester is the 2 litre Turbo model, which probably increases the fuel consumption a bit. My YO (they are farmers so I trust them on this sort of thing!!) have a Nissan XTrail that they tow a large Ifor and often 2 15.2 plus horses with. Theirs is an 03 model I think and they seem very pleased with it and have had it for a few years. Must add we are in a very hilly area.

i woulde'nt trust them if they will do stupid things like tow a trailer with two big horses with a xtrail... its an accident waiting to happen!!!!

A Forester isn't heavy enough to tow a laden tralier.
