4x4 advice

Hello

I could do with a bit of advice re towing and 4x4 please...

I'm looking for something that will mainly tow a1 x 16.3hh TB type and sometimes 2 horses on short journeys.

I don't have a big budget...circa £10k so main dealers aren't likely to have anything. This leaves me with smaller dealers which I find quite scary.

Ideally not a pick up truck.

All help welcome...I'm totally clueless and rather nervous

Pick something with a good 2.5d engine. Kia sorrento, hyundai tuscon, an x5 or a mercedes jeep type ?

Not at all, but then I haven’t had to do much with it. In factMy next car is a Ssangyong Musso.
I had the Rexton for about 6yrs . Pollits the dealers in Exeter are brilliant.

I'm going to be new to towing too that is daunting in itself...but surely be fine.

A few years ago I bought a car that wasn't as it seemed...I had to get legal advice and whilst it all got sorted it was pretty stressful for a while

So the thought of getting rid of a "good" car and getting an older car is a bit scary...

I guess like getting a new horse!!

Only get a land rover if you have a husband….who’s a mechanic ??
Theyre great 4x4’ off road, we’ve literally been stuck in bogs and hauled ourselves out, towing a 3+ tonne load, but clumpy/heavy/drink fuel on road. (Mentioning just in case you were veering off in the LR direction)

There’s been a fair few threads over the months what vehicle to tow with, the more modern light-weight 4x4’s seem very adequate, but i cant remember makes, so worth using the search function top right of screen to find threads with loads of suggestions.

As I understand it it’s not the engine size which is key to your decision but torque output of the engine…higher torque figure tows heavier weights….and I have been told of cars with higher torque values than my truck (OH is a petrolhead).

You fella is likely to be helpful...am I right in saying I look at the trailer MAM and the vehicle will list somewhere what it's capable of?

As a general rule, anything Toyota or Mitsubishi tends to run for ever. If you want to take a look at the caravan magazines, they are always doing reviews of which vehicle can tow what load. Just factor in 700kg of fidgeting horse.

I can second the ssangyong rexton, had one for nearly three years and love it. We use ours as the dog car, room for four labs in the back and can leave the middle row seats up, so room for passengers. It took a day longer to get parts, but other than that no problems and it doesn't live at the mechanics!

While I love my LWB Defender, it’s a known solid vehicle. Would I go buying one now? Probably not. You need someone who really knows these vehicles to both test drive and put it up on a lift for a really thorough inspection.

And if you are at all likely to be in a low emission zone, it will get expensive. Road tax and fuel will not be cheap.

So as great as they are, I wouldn’t buy another one at the moment.

BMA2…..if my OH was home I d ask more of him but he s working in Norway this week…MAM is important and there is a post by ROG with all questions answered…post 495 in a thread about towing weights…I think..

If going for a Hyundai, the Santa Fe has a greater towing weight than the Tucson. I am in the same situation as you, I have made myself a list of suitable vehicles and keep an eye on what's coming up for sale but it's difficult to choose the final vehicle.

I have a 2017 Ssangyong Rexton. Never had a problem with it and it tows so well with a towing max of 3500 ton. I love it. Great boot size too for dogs as already said. More for your money too!
