At the moment we don't have a car to tow the trailer, and well we need one! so we're looking for a 'decent' one that will tow our rice trailer with 2 horses in! Our old Isuzu trooper used to pull that easily, but poor thing has now gone to car heaven!!

Mum wants a LWB, diesel, 7 seater, and must be younger than 1994!

Out of these, what would you recomend/consider buying..etc! they are all around the same price!

Toyota Hilux - 2.4

Mitsubishi Shogun - 2.8

MITSUBISHI Pajero - 2.8

Isuzu Trooper - 3.1

Also, would you buy a 4x4 to pull the trailer or would you buy a horsebox and a runa round car??

thanks

I had a Paj - towed really well but was forever going wrong. I may just have been unlucky tho!! Friend has a shogun, same age, and nothing major ever gone wrong with hers - silly fiddly bits like electric windows playing up but not exactly a major problem!!
Have heard the Hilux are reliable beasties tho!

thanks for that

i'd heard from someone else that it was forever going wrong for them, but just thought they might have been unlucky, as we were with our Trooper....but haven't heard ANYONE else say that about Troopers!!

thanks again!! i'm really liking the hilux..teehee!! It looks nice

my mum had a shogun which i used to tow with from time to time it was fantastic, felt so safe with it felt like it could tow my house!!!!
to add

i now have a lorry as couldnt afford the fuel for day to day running of 4x4,,, so another lorry gal!!!!

I currently have a small truck and a trailer (greedy I know, but 5 nags to transport), prefer the truck option, it's very expensive to run a 4x4 (the servicing etc. is pricey, on top of the extreme price of diesel) on a day to day basis, just to have a towing vehicle for weekends. I suppose it depends on the mileage your Mum does on a day to day basis.

It's MUCH easier to reverse the truck too!

we have a kia sorrento, its not as big as some of the other 4x4s but has a towing capacity of 2.8 tonne so pretty big, also does about 33mpg so more eco than many others, one poss
-ve is the clearance underneath isn;t a high as some but unless you;re driving over fields with deep tracks not a prob.

you dont want a hilux coz that's a pick-up truck - you need a hilux Surf and you definitely dont want a 2.4 because they're completely and utterly gutless to drive let alone with a trailer on the back. I've just bought a 3.0L TD Surf and it's fab. My mate has one and tows a full laden 510 with no probs - a 2.4 would grind to a halt and they have huge problems with cracked heads too. The 3.0L is extremely reliable and goes on forever - at least I hope mine will!

Star - whoops! It is a Hilux surf!! thanks

Lady_Luck - thanks! Mum has test drived them and she just doesn'l like them!! They are just no what she wants!! wierd as i quite like them, but when it's mums car, i don;t really have much of a say!!!

thanks everyone

just t say i have had a trooper, pajero and now a shogun and the best most reliable is the shogun and my OH agrees he a mechanic, one thing i would say bout high lux, u never see what they did to it on top gear????they burnt it, blew it up, drowned it in sea and it still started every time, thwy even hit with a crushing ball and still started!!!
