I am looking at 4x4s to enable me to tow a trailer however I want something that has relatively good MPG and that doesn't guzzle the fuel too much as I will be using it to commute to wok etc also. Can anyone recommend anything? I was looking at Pajeros but they seem to be very juicy. Thanks:)

We have a pick-up and find it far more economical to run than the Kia Sorrento we had before. it isn't just doing better mpg it is also cheaper to tax and insure.

I would recommend a Nissan x trail if it is up to what you are towing. Good mpg and a good balance between on road comfort and off road ability, has 2wd 4wd and a low speed only use differential lock. Lots available too. However it depends on what you are pulling as to whether its suitable, what are you looking for it to pull weight wise??

I'd second the xtrail - I have a 2005 version that I use for getting to and from work. Economy seems pretty good.

I haven't towed with it myself yet, although that was the intention when buying it, but my brother borrowed it to tow their trailer across a muddy field when his car couldn't cope and it was fine.

It does have a limit of 2500kg though, so if you wanted to tow a couple of large horses it may not be big enough...

My Terrano isn't bad - not sure what the mpg is on a run, but towing I worked it out to 20. Just make sure you don't get automatic, or permanent 4WD, they drink fuel.
