I have convinced my dad to sell his car (he never uses) and sell mine to combine the money for a 4x4 And a little run around.

Once the run around is bought we have around £3000-£3500 (max!) for a 4x4. I used to have a 01 shogun which I bought for £2500 and loved but for some reason these same ones are around the £4k mark nowadays!

I'm pulling two 15.2hh lightweight horses and a relatively light weight trailer so no more than 2 tonne max in weight (that includes tack)

What is the best to look for? Ideally I would like it no older than 2001 as my dad won't understand how the oldies are the best so I need to keep him sweet.

Any ideas?

Thanks all

A word of warning, many people will suggest the KIA Sorento, you will get one for your budget but they have a common fault with the drive shaft that can cost £4k to fix. If you look at one get this checked. It can be a dangerous fault. We have returned ours under warranty due to this fault.

I recently replaced my beloved Daihatsu Fourtrak (K reg :) ) withi an 02 plate Isuzu Trooper 3.0 TD.
It tows my 2 boys, both TB's one 15.1hh the other 17.1hh in a big old ride trailer so easily, you hardly notice it on the back!
I bought mine for £2500 and had a lot of choice (some newer models) for that money.
The only thing that swung it for me was mine is the commercial vehicle, so basically a van at the back meaning I get commercial tax and inusrance so much cheaper :)

Emma s- funnily enough I was looking at a shogun which was commercial. Does it automatically mean that it's cheaper on tax/insurance then? (never knew this!)

Probably no use to you but thought I would mention it, I am selling cheaply my beloved shogun although it is older than what you want. R reg 3000v6, tows my wessex 3 horse trailer with 3 horses in it easily.7 seats, top of the range, leather, heated seats etc Starts first time every time. £1600.

Reason for sale.......

I have just picked up a new Range Rover vogue :D:D:D !!!!! I cant really believe it , just keep laughing out loud as I drive along the road, sure I will get pulled over for being the mad woman in the range rover or will get pulled in and accused of stealing it!! ;). Towing with it for the first time tomorrow, hope I wont be disappointed, it has a lot to live up to compared to the shoguns towing ability.

Good luck towing with the vogue juliag! Mine is nowhere as good as my trusty old J reg Toyota surf and that only has a 2.4 L engine. Love the vogue to drive but not to tow. OP get a good Toyota if i were you but get the 3 litre.

What about Isuzu trooper? These are also brilliant and I saw a few autotrader. I was looking for one for ages but came across a rare nissan patrol so bought that instead.

We had a troop 04 plate, was a company car, loved it. Was also classed as a commercial vehicle as it was a van. Was great for towing. I think the 3.0 ones have a major common fault though, bit of googling will bring it up. We now have a nacky

hyundai terracan, 2.9l turbo diesel, boot opens upwards so doesnt get stuck on jockey wheel like discos, massive boot too, really comfy, tows like a train! never got stuck in all the snow, we went everywhere and towed a people carrier stuck in the snow too! its an 03 reg and cost 3500 a couple of years ago, its a real work horse, we have upgraded the tyres to all terrain tyres aswel, cant fault it on anything!!

Thats really interesting, will let you know how I get on. thats if we can get the tow bar on, struggling to get a spanner big enough to do the bolt! Keep telling the other half to pop it up to the garage in the village but of course being a man its '' nearly done it now, I dont need any help thankyou!''. So worst case scenario it will be the shogun towing tomorrow! lol

Having said that , have discovered the adventure cam in the front of the vogue so would love to put that into the trailer and watch the horses on the tv screen as we drive along.

OH just came back in, its on so looks like the vogue will def be towing tomorrow!

We had a discovery before the shogun , good tow car but didnt like it as a road car, the shogun is far better towing and as a road car than the discos.
