Hi

I'm interested in buying a second hand 4x4 which will be capable of towing probably around 1,800 kgs / one horse plus trailer.

My heart says previous version Range Rover (not the current one - I'm not a drug dealer) but my head says something Japanese for reasons of reliability. In any event I'll get a diesel. Are any of the other Land Rovers any good - I'm just concerned about reliability.

What do you think?

Thanks

LJ

If you want a workhorse and not too worried about comfort then you cannot beat a Landrover Defender.Although the newer Defenders are getting much better on the comfort side with electric windows, air con and better noise insulation.

I would go for a Discovery every time. I have had one of these and the shape Range Rover you are after. I actually found the Discovery nicer to drive (and I do a lot of miles). It is a great tow car. Defenders tend to come up quite a bit more expensive than the Discovery for the same age/condition car.

We've always had Defenders - lovely great vehicles they are BUT one less than £10k will have been used off-road, and if it's an ex-work vehicle ie off a farm etc as most of them are, they won't have been looked after very well. Servicing costs are high - although the parts are cheap, they are a b*gger to work on and labour rates aren't good. Having said that, I loved mine hugely (and in fact we are selling it so if you are interested in a V reg 110 CSW with 12 seats....)

Have just bought a newer Toyota Land Cruiser. Bland, automatic (which I loathe), with all the toys (which the kids love), it does the job and is cheaper than the landrover. But I know where my heart lies and it's not with this one...

Unless you are talking about the new shape Disco, I would steer well clear of them - notoriously unreliable.

I hope this helps.

[/ QUOTE ] Dont buy an old shape range rover unless you like meeting brakedown and garage folk if you want to be on first name terms then go for it
