Just posting this for a friend, who has recently sold her Discovery and is looking for a replacement. She needs something that is capable of towing an IW510 complete with 16.2 horse, and loaded with all eventing kit! However, it is also for getting to work and socialising (!) so, especially now, fuel consumption is also important. She's looking or something fairly young and has up to £10k. What would your recommendations (and definite "no"s) be???

Would definately recommend an Isuzu Trooper I think they are by far one of the best 4X4's to tow with. Loads of room in the back as well for tack etc. Only downside is not so great on fuel but what 4X4 is ?

Jerky Kia Sorento....... Mine preferably!!!!!

After being involved in an accident with a trailer I couldn't recommend anything to tow them with - I am just too paranoid. Splash out on a small horsebox and a small runaround - best of both worlds

I though Discos were about the best bet when it comes to fuel consumption 38mpg?! I could be wrong!

yep you will get 2/3 mpg more in the disco than a defender.

Nissan Terrano, I can get 42mpg if I hover my foot very lightly over the accelerator!

even better if you ride the clutch downhill

I have a nissan navara which is lovely and fairly economical - its the older shape one and cost me lots less than £10k, I'm not sure what the MPG is but if I fill the tank it costs me about £75 and i get 400 miles plus! Which is a lot better than my old pajero. However it is a big car and so can be a little bit of a hassle to park.
I did see a very nice 2003 defender at a local 4x4 garage yesterday, although was a hardbacked one with no windows so maybe not ideal.

Ditto, try for a SWB one though as they use less fuel than a LWB

Excellent for towing

How about getting a 4x4 with a petrol/LPG engine? I have a 4.0L Jeep Cherokee and it does about 150 miles per tank towing which only costs £25! They tow just as well as a diesel and are cheaper. FWIW the Jeep are built for high mileage so I'd get an older one and calculate how many miles it did per year which will give you a better idea of the wear on the engine. Mine is 14 years old and in much better nick than some 4 year olds!
