4x4s to tow - what is best?

I'm looking into buying a 4x4 or similar for trekking to my yard and back in winter/bad weather, and also to do hay runs etc.
Well, this is how it started... I have also toyed with the idea of taking my trailer test if I did have a 4x4.
So can anyone advise the smallest and most affordable on the market, suitable for all above jobs?
 
The smallest ones are often not up to the job of towing, they are also rubbish space wise, especially for hay runs. A pick up would be ideal for this but they are big vehicles and quite thirsty. What are you planning to tow? just the one horse with a light trailer? if so a decent estate car with 4wd may just suit you better!
 
Hmmm Yeh, I know what you are saying. I visited a few dealers with the likes of rav4s and honda crvs but most have said they're road cars and not for much much else... Hmm.
Would like the opinion to pull 2 small horses in a small trailer.
 
You are probably looking in the Isuzu Trooper, Toyota Landcruiser, Mitsubitshi Pajero/Shogun, Land Rover Defender/discovery bracket then, these are all proper workhorse 4x4 vehicles, pickups include, Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu Rodeo, Mitsubitshi L200,

All of these vehicles will offer good towing weights and have the brakes and suspension to cope with the stresses that towing puts of a vehicle - especially when towing livestock.

Lots of people rave about Nissan X-Trail which seem to be a bridge between the baby 4x4's and the proper ones, personally I don't like them, Had to tow yet another one out of the muddy field it was floundering in at the weekend! If you are going to tow safely buy a proper tool for the job!
 
I looked at the x - trails & personally they just dont measure up to the job for me I certainly wouldn't want to pull 2 horses !

I have a land rover defender & love it ! I do 200 miles a week commuting & its perfectly happy

There are a lot of "4x4's" around these days that seem the part but can't actually do the job well enough
