4yr old champion Arab at York Sales Friday

how sad - if I lived nearer, I would. how does a well bred horse like that end up in a sale ring?
Sign of the times, I suppose.

To be devils advocate, he may be well bred for inhand showing, but that doesn't mean his conformation/temperament will make him a good riding horse, sometimes what is wanted for either job is very different. Arab in hand horses are not judged on their ability to go on to make good riding horses (& before I get stoned I own & ride 2 pure bred arabs). They don't reward calm dispositions & comfy paces in in hand showing (experience). I would be interested to know if he was blemished so couldn't show anymore. If he isn't suitable for riding, & is blemished for showing then he may have no value. Very few arabs are worth serious money anyway, not a mainline breed that people seek out.

How sad, very unlikely to make 15.3 I would have thought, more likely to stick at 14hands. Hopefully someone will snap him up but he is small.

Lot 20 sounds nice.

Can I ask a question? I'm not being deliberately provocative, it's a genuine question.

I don't know anything about York sales so for all I know it might be just like Beeston (which IME is horrible!), or it might be like Malvern sport horse sales... Either way, what is the problem with a horse going through the sales?

I have friends who've bought cracking horses through the sales, and know lots who've sold through the sales too. I would hope that any horse going through the sales or being sold by a dealer, or privately, would find a nice home. But I can't see why this horse in particular has been chosen to be discussed.

I was thinking exactly this and how do you know he won't have a high reserve on him?

York is not a high end sale, not as bad as holmfirth but you dont go expecting to get a "nice" horse.

Lots of drop out racehorses, cobs, and broken down old crocks. You definitely need your eyes open!

Sadly my old horse ended up there due to a dearler lieing very badly blah blah ( I would never send any horse to a sale ever and If I had of know I would have had him back) and he ended being pts 3 month's later :( But at least I found him and he had a good last few month's :) :( There are some nice horse's to be had but be careful, I brought one from Beeston and he has turned out to be a real diamond in the rough, Think what I am trying to say if it sound's to good to be true its normally is...

Ditto. Our Spud was an ex British National Champion in hand but when we got him he had been abandoned with some friends of ours as 'worthless'. His previous owners had said 'shoot it' because he'd got that stressed out that he couldn't stable any more. He is actually a lovely riding horse, although is took him quite a while to really understand 'forwards'. His breeder is lovely, one of the good 'uns, and was gutted about how he ended up - she made a decision then that no horse she'd bred would leave her ownership entire. There are winds of change which will hopefully grab hold in time, but the arab world is still a very sad and depressing place sometimes :( Hopefully this horse will find a good home.

Chris Lowe from Claverdon Stud has left a message on FB asking if anyone is going to the sales on Friday could they urgently contact him....
