Hi All

I recently purchased a youngster to bring on and compete - he is 4yr old with a very mature brain and a will to learn

however i am a little lost as to what or what not be be doing at this early stage in his career - my aim was to do a BYEH class however i feeling travelling for 3 hrs to do such is a little much for him - and there are no others in Lancashire.

Any advice on what other classes are availble and also what other people are doing with there youngsters on a daily basis - ie schooling, training, etc.

I try to work him 5 days with 2 days off (one of which he on headcollar end of lunge line) - he is out in the field everyday and his work is currently - 2 days shcooling (1 Jumping), 2 Hacking, 1 Lunging.

I would love to know what others are doing with there 4yr olds?

Thanks in advance for any help

I am a big fan of not doing very much with 4yos. All the riders I truly respect tend to leave them to just learn slowly and get stronger then in their 5th year begin to start them off as they are mentally and physically strong enough. It is very rare that winners of BYEH 4yo class go on and do much when they get older.

QR but I'd focus on producing a nice, all-round riding horse rather than channelling him to be an eventer - it'll ensure that he always has a job, even if not yours. So long as he sees shows, as a competitor at low level or just attending, sees fences (SJ & XC), hacks out well, and has the basic principle of "go where I ask you to, in the way in which you're told to" then I wouldn't worry too much about the rest... it'll follow. Oh, and don't be afraid of remembering that less is more with work sometimes. Good luck!
