I am still reeling from reading about this. Horrific, but before we jump to lay sole blame on Ireland for this sort of cruelty and abuse, many UK horses are deliberately shipped over to Ireland to evade laws on sending your UK horses live to this cruel plight. Once here they then leave again via Belfast re labelled as Irish horses on exactly the same horrific route this shipment were on.

We no longer have an abattoir here due to more horrific abuse and it was shut down after a lot of demonstrating and pressure on the appropriate authorities. Where exactly did people think their no longer wanted old, sick and injured horses would go if they were not prepared to pay for them to be humanely euthanised?

I could go on and on, but nothing much changes and the little I and others have done over the years to try to help and change attitude within the horse world itself, has not even made a dent in the mindset of a vast amount of horse owner's conscience.

Again more suffering for the lack of an abattoir. I wish they would lobby for reopening one in the uk.

There is one in the UK, but it doesn’t get very much trade anymore due to a) TBs being automatically signed out and b) most other horses being signed out if they have any veterinary treatment (following the bute contamination that sparked the horse meat scandal). It would be much more sensible to have withdrawal periods for certain drugs, as in farm animals.

Can they not be slaughtered there at all for pet food/zoo trades then? (Even with bute)

I agree. When horses could be slaughtered for meat in this country the old, lame, unsuitable had a value. This meant that they would go for meat and you didn't see them being passed from pillar to post. As long as dispatched humanely there is no issue. Back in the 70s old riding school horse etc routinely ended their days there and it was the norm. It has to be better than what happens now!

Does a pet food abattoir need to be human food grade?

Sorry for the from questions, just interested.
Yes it does, the same with food cereals that that are given to animals, you are not supposed to give waste human food to animals in case its contaminated and causes animal disease. I used to feed biscuit waste crumb and its bagged and tagged straight from the factory.
The meat in dog food is wastes from human food production.
These horses in this condition would not be fit for human consumption, even if they had a clean passport, because they are sick. Most animals now go for rendering,

Yes we can use a local knackerman who will destroy them on site and takes them to zoo or kennels, charges around 200 depending on size, lots of people won’t pay sadly.

Not just horses, lorry loads of livestock come from Uk to Northern Ireland, down through the south and onto the long boat to France, Uk is getting around the livestock laws very nicely and pretending they are all about the animal welfare.

It not so much the UK getting round the regulations it’s part of our agreements with the Republic we have had freedom of movement for a long time.
Criminals exploit this .

We have at least banned live export which gives us a certain moral high ground .

How can we improve things ?
More enforcement, checking of horses entering the UK from Ireland and of stock leaving the UK ago Ireland .
Horses are microchipped they could be checked so when they reach UK soil.
Will it happen, no ,our border forces can’t keep our borders secure to people entering illegally let alone organise themselves to check horses .

But these horses started out in Ireland and that’s where change that would have help these horses should start .
The TB’s will have been chipped they can at least try to track some of their journey to this terrible situation .
This trade shames both nations it’s unacceptable .
And WHW gets to cover a large bill to deal with this it’s a good job they are there to step up .
They are a good charity doing important work they deserve our support .
