5 reasons why you should:

1. Greenwich park will provide no future facility for equestrian use, a complete waste of tax payers money.

2. Travel links to London are poor at best, therefore it will be difficult to attend just to watch.

3. The LEZ will mean people that accompany events (pony club parade etc) will be impacted and have to face a travel burden. International lorries may well not meet LEZ requirements.

4. If we built a permenant facility, the UK could host the World Equestrian Games raising the profile of our sport and increasing sponsorship

5. London has too much travel and congestion, I'm sure local residents aren't too chuffed. A better venue would be just off a motorway - my vote is for Swindon!

Also shame on the BEF for not taking this golden opportunity to beef up the UK equestrian venues, especially with places like Lackham college closing.

SWINDON!!?!??!?!?!?!??!

Now that would give us all something to look forward to........

I used to live right on Junction 16 - if we were still there, we could have insisted that they paid us millions and demolished our house for the cause - there are acres and acres of farmland they could use for a lovely XC course!

save yourself a few minutes. i know for a fact that altenative venues are already being looked at and there is no way as i have been saying since they annouced london got the games that they would dig up a world heritage site for a horse contest. we will be lucky if equestrian is in at all and eventing is certainly on very shaky ground. one fatality, horse or even worse human, and thats it for eventing.

6. The capacity of the grounds will only be around 60,000- considering there are generally over 100,000 spectators on Badminton xc day, it means tickets are going to be limited and so most who want to go wont be able to.

I think the whole thing is absurd

As nice as Greenwich would be (I live 5 minutes from there) it would be a total waste of money to have somewhere that is not re-usable. Waste of money ! (Would be very pretty though with the views of Canary Wharf over the Thames!)

1. Greenwich is a sh1t venue for horse sports.

2. London is a sh1t venue for horse sports.

3. People of Greenwich don't want the equestrian sports held there.

4. People of London generally don't want the Olympics.

5. No matter....as Lucretia has already said....they won't be held in Greenwich anyway

I would imagine nothing will be said till after this years when they will have a moment of realisation that equestrianism will not fit in grenwich.

Or worse if there are any xc mishaps in hong kong that it will be removed from the olympics.

He He at Weezy. I'd want it at Blenheim too if I lived in the Cotswolds.

Though I think that it should be at Blair Atholl In scotland as its a great scenic venue with lots of mountains and bagpipes.

But on a serious note I to don't see Grenwich Park getting used. To small, Not enough capacity. Id like to know what other olympic sport can generate 100,000 spectators. The new Wembly statium is one of teh biggest in the world and it has 90,000 seating capacity but only about 71-72000 is generaly available.

To me, the most important factor is that most of the investment would be lost if Greenwich site went ahead.
On a scenic and capacity note, I do actually think the park and area are great...for a RC eventing championships type event but not Olympic Games.
As I live in London, part of me would love to see the games there but surely it would be a transport/traffic nightmare.
My vote goes to Windsor Park

Surely this is about putting on a competion that will raise the profile of the sport and engage a wide an audience as possible

It is worth noting it will not be a 4 star but a 3star competiton and it will not have a " shopping village etc etc ie it will not be another Burghley or Badminton

The 100,000 faithful would go ( if able wherever it is held but this is about encouraging people from outside the sport to get inetrested

Like they say in the Hickstead Programme why not have the equestrian events at hickstead there is a fab ring and there is acres for XC, stabling facilties with scope for more, expertise etc only a short but quality jorney round the M25 and down a bit! could more than cope with the crowds. I cannot understand why when we have facilties in place already we dont put funding into them and make them even better rather than build a temp facillity no-one can benefit from in the future!

Hickstead would need millions spending on it to bring it up to scratch tbh...it's quite shabby in places. That said, if they did invest in it it would provide a legacy for horse sport in this country...unlike wasting money on temporary facilities at Greenwich.

I'm a little unsure of the size of Hickstead though. Greenwich Park is about 180 acres I believe...and deemed too small. Does anyone know how much land there is at Hickstead as i'd be surprised if it was significantly more

I know of a fab alternative venue that's in the running so I'm pretty sure it won't be held at Greenwich anyway...!

Anyway, it must have to be held in London or just outside as it is the LONDON Olympics, not the ENGLAND or UK Olympics...

Personally, Badminton, Gatcombe or Blenheim would suit me fine though!! ROFL!!

I wouldn't get too hung up on the venue being in London ! The sailing is already being held at Weymouth and the Rowing at Windsor...Hickstead is closer to London than either of those two...and don't forget 'London' Gatwick Airport is hardly in the centre of town either

Oh...and don't forget that the equestrian events of the Beijing Olympics were only moved to Hong Kong quite late in the day as far as planning was concerned

Things can and likely will change...

I don't understand why they are so desperate to hold them in Greenwich Park (apart from because it is in London). Various other facilities such as the watersports centre will actually serve a purpose AFTER the games, and will help to regenerate a run-down part of London.

However the equestrian facilities will not help with this, so they serve as no long term benifit to London. I don't see why they have a problem with just moving them outside London.
