Would you have a five stage vetting done on a horse if you had had them on loan for 6 months and now looking to buy? Horse in question has not shown any lameness at all during the 6 months but had previously done a check ligament 2 years ago which had apparently healed well. The horse hasnt been flexioned or done anything strenous either than a bit of dressage and a 2ft 3 cr xc in last six months. Doesnt nap, buck, rear, teeth have been seen to, no quirks at all really, feet are excellent, eyesight and hearing seem fine...

Horse used to do a bit of intro BE eventing and has had a fairly busy life in the past. She is now 12 yrs and is being offered to me for less than 2k (originally for sale 6mths ago at 3.5k). I have been really happy with her and I think the owner is very happy with her being with me.

Just worried I am missing something that flexions would pick up or lung/breathing exam? (and that she is too cheap!!!!)

What do you reckon?

I had mine on loan for a month before buying her (my little one, not my new one) and had a 2 stage vetting after. Wish i did a 5 stage!

But in your situ, I would prob do a 2 stage, as they should do flexions anyway I think?

I was in a similar situation - and I had a full 5-stage done... It didn't bring up any nasties, but it meant I went into ownership having made an informed decision. Had any issues been brought up, you can decide whether they are significant enough to stop the sale or not. Things like the eye examination may reveal an unknown that would be impossible for you to have pick up.... I took the attitute that the cost of a 5-stage was tiny compare to the next 15 years of ownership! (It also makes insurance easier!!) Good luck, and enjoy!

I would definetly got for the 5, you are saving one and a half grand of the price so i would use spme of the money to get the full vetting done.

Personally i would just go for a 2 stage. They still do flexions etc. If you have had her for 6 months and done fast work etc i think any significant wind problems would have become apparent by now.... I know lots will disagree but i would be satisfied with a 2 stage.

Good luck with whatever you decide
