Today is 5 weeks post colic surgery for Chico.

So glad I took the chance on surgery - we are having a completely complication free recovery, i think Chico read the 'Perfect colic surgery recovery' handbook and is following it to the letter.

Here he is today - sporting the ever popular box rest stable stain (all the fashion conscious box rest horses are wearing them)

Got his weight back on but lost some muscle but thats not a problem.

He is being a dream to hand graze.

Fingers crossed his recovery continues and we will be back to our adventures together in no time.

Looks good! Thats some good vet skills on the incision, can hardly see it. Looks like top work!

Glad he's doing well :)

He looks fantastic, even with his designer stable stain !

How is he coping with his box rest, i'm hoping to bring my 2 year old filly home from vets tomorrow or Friday, she's been in for a week with a serious eye injury, and will be subjected to quite a few weeks box rest once she is home, i'm dreading it if i'm honest because she'll be in alone during day and will be none to happy I don't think.

Hope Chico continues to recover at a good rate and that you are soon our bumbling about together :-)

How is he coping with his box rest?

He is actually coping beautifully. Apparently he just stands quietly in his stable all day, only getting excited when I turn up (he now recognises the sound of my wheelbarrow and knows when i'm coming!). He isnt silly and hasnt reared or kicked at the door etc.

I know some horses hate it but i am lucky i think that Chico doesnt seem to mind too much.

Good luck with your girl, hope she recovers well xx

How lovely to see him looking so well. I read some of your blog some weeks ago so it is great to have an update from you. Glad he doesn't mind the box rest :)

Hi OP, I've not been brave enough to post before, but I read the whole blog in one go (in tears at some bits!) and i just had to say how lucky he is to have such a loving mum, and I'm so glad he's doing so well.

H xx

So glad his recovery is going so well hes looking great, but how do you keep him so clean.Just one little stable stain? My grey is gross, he is covered in stains, when i ride & he gets warm the smell rises up to greet you!! dont you just love them

He looks great, well done to both of you! For what its worth mine always has a regulation stable stain!!

he's looking fantastic! A credit to the talented vet and the devoted mummy that have lovingly nursed him back to health. Well done to all, may he go from strength to strength :D

He is on straw pellets that have been excellent at keeping him clean, it sucks the wet down to the bottom layer instantly and coats the poop in a 'protective' bedding layer.

He only has those stains now as he completely trashed his bed the other day, and i have my suspicions that some rain water leaked in, so his bed was a mess. All clean again now though.
