My loans owner has asked me to work with her new horse.
He is a 5 year old welsh a - he is too small for me, im 5"6, but am only 8 stone so not a problem, I have been just doing a little bit of walking on him to get him used to my weight and to get to know how he moves. He is a great little pony but he is extremly hard to get moving and very nappy! It has been a few years since I have worked with a youngster does anyone have any advice how I can go about dealing with his napping problems? He is great on the right rein, put him on the left and he loses it! I am unable to turn him in a circle to the left he just does a 360 to the right!

Depending on his size it could just be that you are too big for him to feel balanced. I don't mean you are squashing him, but even if he's up to the weight, height alone might be hindering him if he's green, legs in the wrong place for aids etc, especially if you haven't worked with a youngster recently. I think either a good instructor, or if you think the height might be an issue a competent kid & get owner to pay for lessons.

He is very balanced for a 5 year old, he is exactly the same with kids which is why she has asked me to ride him, try and get rid of these habits see if I can improve him so she knows her kids will not lose control of him when he has one of his moments. He is very good on one rein as I have said and not nappy, its just the left rein. Thomas acts up with everyone and needs some serious schooling. If I was too big he wouldnt move - we realised this when a friend attemped to ride him NOT a good idea! any more advice? x

Didn't mean at all you were so big he found it difficult, I just meant that being a tall rider myself, there comes a point where height compromises your ability to school. I'd still go with the lessons, especially if he's for owners kids. Even if he behaves for you, sec a's have a habit of clocking on to a small child not up to the job! If he naps, I'd hack him in company, & school the basics out hacking, gradually working towards him hacking in front before going out alone. Then, when he has confidence in you, is used to being alone & has basic schooling transfer him back to schooling alone.

I do understand where your coming from compeletly although I do ride very short when im riding him so I have contact with my leg, He is an absoleuete nightmare!!! on the roads, very very spooky, which is why I was starting with school work first, I ride him around the field(stables are all on field so I got betweem the gaps of seperated fields) just so I am not always in a school and he is fine, and when I school him in the top field he's fine but she want's her kids to be able to ride without him napping in the school, even on a lunge he doesnt nap its just with a rider??

Every horse has a good and bad rein maybe he just prefers going to the right have similar problems with my youngster on one rein but he's improving maybe try everytime he 360s to the right make him quickly 360 to the left and ride him out of it to the left on to a circle where you want him to go do this everytime he naps as a tight circle under your control breaks there concentration,
