Not good - I've just put my pony on there and in the papers for the 2nd time - we didn't have a call last time either. Is the credit crunch making people less willing to buy horses?
I just had this conversation with a friend yesterday - She's got a super allrounder/eventer up on Horsequest, virtually no calls. I've been meaning to do a post on here for her to see if anyone can come up with how to make the ad more attractive. Shame because he's such a talented chap.
Ooooh - should add though please all keep your fingers crossed for me as I have someone coming to see one of mine this afternoon. He's a great genuine boy so I'm hoping she likes him. I've just given him a bath and I'm still soaking wet. He hasn't had one since he did the Area Trials last year
I sold my mare through Horsemart in December last year. Only had 3 calls but the woman who travelled all the way from somerset (3 1/2 hours!) bought her.
However, my outgrown pony, Benji, who was and still is an absolute superstar, wasnt sold through horsemart despite me putting an ad up (I got very few calls) - I sold him through the local riding club and I see him all the time and stay in touch. I really do think local advertising helps like in tack shops, RC websites etc.
Sorry you're not having much luck. I work as a financial adviser and I have to admit people aren't buying 'luxury' goods such as horses, much at the moment. Even the clothes shops are bringing the summer sales forward in an effort to get us to spend money!
Just had a look at the ad.
Nice mare and probably fairly priced, maybe slightly on the high side.
The way I see it from the ad she falls almost into no-mans land
a) looks like a nice hunter type but ruled out due to blemish
b) cracking all rounder type but some people may be put off by the 'sharp' comment
c) advertised in sportshorses yet she is an 8yo with no apparent track record.
Personally I would move her to allrounders, try and get a jumping piccie included, remove the blemish remark and the 'sharp' remark.
You may get some unsuitable calls but you can weedle those out on the phone, but what you might capture is people wanting to do local shows or are more capable than the ad might suggest needed, who otherwise wouldn't have rung.
Do you think she's maybe too expensive for what she is, Kat? Look at the one underneath her - same age, much the same size, OK a gelding not a mare, but with the mileage that proves his ability, and £750 cheaper. He's not nearly as pretty as Missy, mind you !
Fingers crossed you can find someone to buy her soon, anyway.
I havent seen the ad but I have to admit the word 'sharp' worries me - I bought a new horse 4 months ago and although Im a capable rider I wouldn't have wanted anything sharp. I think that word can be misconstrued.
but one thing about the sharp, I wouldn't have put that about her, I am not the bravest and I didn't think she was particularly sharp, I have seen others who were advertised as bombproof plods and they WERE bloody sharp!
the photos of her are lovely and I am not sure when she went on, but I have only noticed her the last couple of days on Horsemart, which is the one i look at most and i would say the best. be paitent, you should get calls towards the weekend when people have more time.
did you put why you were selling her, always puts peoples mind at rest - i really wish you all the luck in the world as she is lovely
xxxx
Agree with Ben_Jerrys, Take her out of sporthorses and go for Allrounders. Also the bit about a blemish. Makes her sound like she has half a leg missing or something.
The horse underneath is cheap as it has had something wrong with it, why would a normal horse have xrays done of its hock and back - suspected KS?
Would it make you feel better to hear that I have noticed her and thought she was gorgeous, and if I had £4500 to spend on a horse, she would be high on my list?
i looked at the ad this morning being nosey as i do most days, reading the ones that intrest me.
Fromt eh ad i would ring up but sharp (depending how sharp) wouldnt worry me & i'd discuss the blemish on phone & then see for myself
I'd say its the price compared to how the advert sounds.
Shes a lovely mare, but the only competition record you've mentioned is a bit of unaff dressage, but given no scores. You say she's got a good jump but not how high she's jumping at home, what level she could go out and jump at a show, if shes even ever jumped at a show or round a course.
Your advert reads like shes a 4yr old ready to go on and do things, but at 8 people aren't looking for something "to make" a good competition horse, they want something ready to go out and do things.
I think you either need to drop the price by about a grand, or take her out and do some showjumping or something - as nice as she looks, all you have there is £4500 for a nice looking mare thats done a bit of dressage, can't show, is too sharp for a novice and no evidence that shes any good jumping. If you could put that shes recently got a DC round a 3ft SJ course, and that shes been xc schooling and behaved well, then I think you'd easily get the price.
I don't mean to sound harsh, but its a buyers market and if nobody is calling its because she's not priced right for her advert - or not advertised right for her price.
Yeah I think maybe re-word the ad possibly. To be honest I wouldn't even be sure about mentioning a blemish but depends on what the blemish is i guess. I would prefer for someone to ring up or come and see the horse and tell them of the blemish then. It could be something tiny but the fact you mentioned it may to some people suggest she's had a bad injury?
I agree re price at £4500 you would expect a horse to have something to prove it is worth that value.
I work in insuring horse and personally I am amazed at how the credit crunch DOESN'T seem to have affected horse buyers. We are very busy at the moment with people having bought new horses and NOT cheap ones at that. I am not sure where all the people are getting their money from (i could do with some!) but they do seem to be able to spend a ridiculous amount on horses! Put it this way someone's just purchased a horse for over £10K and it hasn't done a thing. Think it's about 4 yo. Personally I think they're crackers as it's supposed to be a SJer but who knows if it will be if it's not done anything??? Madness! keeps me in a job though!
If I was looking I would want to come and see her. The blemish wouldn't bother me, neither would the price, but the sharp comment would. Either way though I would still want to see her, she is exactly the type I would be looking for.
I could be buying hopefully soon, if I can twist the OH arm for another and she would be of interest to me, the blemish I would discuss on the phone, the word sharp whilst it wouldn't put me off, would just make me think Mmmm wonder what that really means.
Would be nice to see her jumping or under saddle , maybe a video, and a reason for her being for sale. The price I would be happy to pay.
I like her a lot (nice to see someone has actually taken the time and effort to get good photos of their horse, not just grazing-in-field ones!) but the "sharp" comment puts me off. Although I am experienced and have ridden sharp, quirky and strong horses, I am not fearless and the word "sharp" is quite a strong word. The purpose of an advert should be to generate interest and the (hopefully) subsequent phonecalls to verify facts and more details. Maybe just leave it as "not novice ride"? The blemish comment is also a bit off-putting as you don't mention what it is. My horse has a "blemish" (scar on her hock, not an issue) but to some people that word = bits of horse missing or un-useable!
I hope you find somewhere for her. If I had that amount of money I would probably call about her.
Right, i'll just reply to everything on this pos rather ten doing individual ones.
My reasoning behind the 'sharp' comment is because she can throw in the od spook and a buck particularly when she's fresh. I've had quite afew people get in contact previously wanting something quiet for a novice which she isn't suitable for so I as hoping to avoid wasting peoples time.
She's been moved to allrounders and the 'sharp' and the blemish comment are gone.
She was sold to me as being 17hh, I've sticked her and she's bang on 16.3hh.....I just ride with my stirrups jacked up in that particular saddle
I personally don't think she's over priced. She's a cracking horse you can do anything with her on the ground and when ridden the right person could get a hell of alot out of her. I have now knocked £500 off her though.
It does say why I'm selling her (too many horses, not enough time or money)
re the blemish, you can see from the photo's that it isn't horiffic but it's enough to get her marked down in the ring.
I think maybe then just sell her a bit better in the advert then - I really really think you'd help your cause by putting in the height she is jumping courses at home, and if she's had any other show experience - just saying scopey jump is very general and could just mean she'll jump big over one cross pole but would never jump a course well.
I have to say from the advert I would be expecting a price of 2.5K max. I just can't see what I would be paying 4 K for when 4K should be able to buy my a reliable riding club schoolmaster.
It needs less about the flowery stuff (i.e standing 4.5 hours for an apprentice) and way more about what she's actually doing, what level dressage is she working at, what height sj, has she done any xc, is she honest.
I would take out not a novice ride and say Enthusiastic or something.
From the advert what I would see is
8yr old mare, not done a lot AND not an easy ride, just doesn't sell her I think..
A nice jumping photo? Like the others but a headshot doesn't tell me much.
Also, no offence but because the advert is a tad flowery (best way to describe it) I'm not sure how much of it I would take on face value, we may know that you are an experienced horseperson able to judge a horses paces, but a stranger doesn't.
So just my thoughts
Is the blemish that scar on the off hind just where the white bit changes to black? That is tiny. I would say that you have taken up Polocross - rather than lack of time. Has she done any XC? Jumps ditches/water etc.. Also with horsemart you need the best bits at the start of the ad as that is what appears on the index page, so don't repeat the age height etc.
How about this?
Registered ISH mare by Lord of the Dance IV. Lovely paces, very comfy ride with a fab scopey jump. Competed unaffiliated dressage and has always done well. Fantastic to handle and be around. Picks things up easily and is very eager to please. Good to box (lorry or trailer), catch, shoe traffic, clip, hacks alone or in company, etc. Good to do in every way. Missy is a stunning, athletic mare who will make somebody a fantastic allrounder. Priced for a quick sale through no fault of her own, I have taken up Polocross. Based at Warwickshire College, Moreton Morrell so excellent trial facilities. (If nobody answers the phone leave a message with your name and number and I''''ll get back to you)
