6 thoroughbreds killed, tragic

What a freakish thing to happen. Hope the horses died quickly of smoke inhalation and passed away before they knew too much.

RIP.x

Terrible. Can't say I understand though how as a driver you get far enough with a trailer on fire, for all the occupants to die but there we are, these things happen.
RIP horses.

Now to me the whole situation sounds wrong, like what was said in a comment above me how would you not see smoke or flames as the driver untill it was too late? How would a cigarette get into the trailer to start with? it just doesn't seem to add up, sadly dispite the circumstances 6 horses died and that is such a bloody shame. RIP babies :(

The words "quickly engulfed" were used as well as "the driver stopped as soon as she saw smoke". Given the through draft in a driven trailer I can see all too easily how the fire would spread very easily and of course you don't get much smoke from dry flammable grass - whether hay or straw - and any smoke which could have been seen would be funnelled out of the rear of the trailer so not very visible.

A horrible incident and my thoughts are with all involved.

Lorry/trailer fires are nasty!

Whilst the vehicle is moving the flames are less, however the nano second you stop then its like a fire ball and in most instances the driver can only get out alive.

As it was in USA they have huge open trailers too allow more airflow into the horses due to the extreme heat over there

Poor neds

Ah i see, i didn't think it through, i just thought how would you not see the flames? Oh yea the trailers over there are built different to ours here aren't they, a cig could of flown in the front quite easily. what a tragic accident :(

A friend lost his wagon and drag to a fire; he was carrying straw from Newmarket and it was only when someone flagged him that he knew anything about it; almost before he stopped the whole thing was engulfed and it burnt so fiercely that the wheels embedded themselves into the tarmac; the whole road was closed for days while it was re-done and he got a hefty bill from the Highways.
Very sad when animals are involved.

Wow that's amazing (thanks for the explanation Jemima-too) and maybe an advert for not carrying haynets or hay (which I personally don't need) with my horse!
