Hi Can anyone help and advise me on which insurance company to use for my horse box? I've not insured a lorry before so I'm not sure which companies to avoid etc

It's a 7.5 ton Horse Box

I've been recommended Anthony Evans for insurance and the recovery - Send me a private message if you'd rather?

Cheers in advance :-)

I have used NFU for 20years, We have needed breakdown assistance 3 times and they were excellent. I would recommend them.

I've just been phoning around for quotes, NFU was the most expensive. I found the most competitive prices, with good recovery service, were SEIB, KBIS and Shearwater.

We've just renewed with seib, no problems with them. Got a quote from nfu and they had completely mucked it up so that didn't give much reassurance!

Read the details of the breakdown cover with Anthony d Evans, unless the vehicle is damaged and it's unsafe they recover the lorry with the horses on board, so lift the front and tow and if you don't want your horses on there that's your problem and you have to sort them out. That is why their recovery is much cheaper.

I am now insured again with NFU again, it's not even that much more expensive!

I rang round a few recently and the most competitive quote was from Shearwater, they also provide decent breakdown cover too.
NFU was one of the most expensive and couldn't offer fully comp due to the age of my box. Shame really as my horse is insured with them and they've been great with recent vets claims.

Shearwater are good . I have a farm but would still use them above NFU as they have got so expensive!
Just so you are all aware the breakdown response will be the same within reason whoever you use of the major insurers as they all use the same company.

I used to use Anthony D Evans until I actually needed recovery on Bonfire night in the middle of Switch Island near Aintree EC at 9pm at night. They said they were too busy to send alternative transport for my horse so would have to jack it up on the recovery lorry with my horse in it and I would have to sign a disclaimer to say they were not responsible for any injury to my horse?!!!!! Luckily I had a very good friend that drove an hour to pick her up as she wasn't the best traveller in a level box let alone jacked up!! I am with NFU now they cost a bit more but cannot fault them :)

Moved from NFU to Shearwater after the former jacked the premiums up a couple of years ago. Shearwater's standard policy also includes any driver over 25 at no extra cost too.

Did check the T and Cs of the breakdown cover carefully as wanted to make sure it included alternative transport which it did and as an added extra now also get homestart included.

I use Anthony D Evans for insurance and have found them extremely competitive and quick to respond with good customer service. However, I would not touch their recovery service with someone elses bargepole. As others have said, they will suspend tow with your horses on board which, I thought, is against the law. I use Equine Rescue Service for my breakdown cover and they have been brilliant.

Thanks to everyone who replied, it certainly helped in my decision.

In the end I went for Shearwater Insurance and I also used them for breakdown cover which is through Equine Rescue Services. I specifically asked about recovering horses at the roadside if the lorry is broken down. Shearwater break down was only £120
They said that they bring a horse lorry to transport the horses to their destination and the ONLY time this is not done and the lorry has to be towed is if the breakdown is on a motorway. For obvious reasons horses have to stay in their lorry :-)

Thanks again

I did break down on the motorway and the rescue service provided by NFU refused to allow the horse to stay on board - even though we were in sight of a motorway junction. I arranged a private rescue as I did not want to take my horse out of the lorry on the motorway -even though the police were happy to close the motorway.
