they brought the age down to 18 so i've been looking into it, i'd say price can vary between £900 and £1500 depending on how much training you need, how many tests etc.
don't bother with 7.5 your better going straight for the hgv - its the same test and same price. Its not easy but if you get a good trainer then you should be fine. I paid just under £1000 which included test fees for both practical and theory, i did intensive course, 4 days training then test on 5th day. I did my in exeter so if thats any use i can give you the details
Unfortunately cannot help with prices of lessons but I'd suggest that you forget the 7.5 tonne vehicles and take your test in something a bit bigger. The reason is that you will end up with a category C licence which means you can drive any size vehicle up to 32 tonnes (4 axle rigid). OK, you may never use it, but it saves taking extra tests in the future and driving an 18 tonne rigid is not that much different from a 7.5 tonne rigid. You may find that by taking lessons in a bigger vehicle there will be more driving schools available to you.
According to the DVLA site you will need to apply for a C1 (7.5 tonne) or C (over 7.5 tonne) provisional licence on form D2. The application is free. You will need to have medical form D4 completed by a Doctor. They will charge for this, my own wanted £120 but I found a perfectly good medical through Cotswold Medical for £52. Shop around. The medical does not have to be done by your GP.
You will need to take the LGV theory test. The multi-choice questions will cost you £35 and the hazard perception £15, you have to have these before taking the practical test. The theory part of the driver CPC will cost another £30.
The LGV practical will cost £115 and the driver CPC practical £55.
That little lot comes to £ 250 just for the tests - a good idea not to fail any part of them.
If the vehicle is being driven for purely personal use, in other words the non commercial carriage of goods then you do not have to do the driver CPC bit, thereby saving some £ 85.
All the prices above are irrespective of whether you are taking C1 or C as C allows you a greater choice of vehicles that would be the one to go for in my opinion.
wow this is brilliant information - thank you very very much! however i woulod worry about making turns in anything bigger than a 7.5 ton but i will have a think about it!
