I’ve recently upgraded from a 3.5t to a 7.5t herringbone and can’t make my mind up on how much width I should give my horse inbetween the partitions.

Tighter for them to lean on? Or wider so they balance themselves?

How wide are yours please?

Some of it depends on the width of the lorry so the amount of angle on the partition.

Some 7.5 tonnes are 7ft6 wide and some 8'.

It also depends on the size of the horse.

With an 8' wagon, and smaller horse, 3ft between partitions at the hinge is sufficient, with only a slight angle. For a larger horse, 3'3 and a bit more angle.

For a larger horse on a 7ft6" wagon, I would want 3'6 between the partitions at the hinges/bolts, so when angled it would be less.

I prefer 8ft tall too for a large horse. Some are only 7ft 6 tall. This is OK for a smaller horse but not really for an XL one.

Thanks. I think my lorry is 7ft 6” but will double check. And it’s 8ft ceiling.
I think the partitions are currently set up less than 3’6” wide so will adjust.

I’ve found it’s trial and error with different horses. My mare prefers more angle and more width as she balances herself, however my gelding prefers less angle and less width as he does use the partitions for support (of which I can’t decide if he’s just lazy or smart enough to understand it’s easier to lean on partitions than balance himself)
