Hi guys

Was just wondering if any of you had got insured/managed to get your children insured on a 7.5ton horsebox? If so could you recommend the insurance company you used please and approx price of insurance if you dont mind :)

Im 19 and currently taking my training for Cat C test so will be more than qualified for a 7.5ton lorry. My dad would be the main driver but I need to be on the policy as named driver for the occasions when no-one can take me/ I want to go with a friend.

Horsebox value would ideally be between £30k-£50k so we would never have to change however if this is a problem for insurance companies then we could buy a cheaper box and then step up to a better one when I am 21.

Any advice greatly appreciated!:) the insurance companies are being very vague and unhelpful with me as I haven't yet purchased the horsebox (why they think I will buy a horsebox without knowing I can get insurance is quite beyond me!).

SEIB insure U21 year olds for the 3.5Ts but i don't know about 7.5Ts - might be worth giving them a call? They're my new favourite insurance company after NFU tried to take the p*ss with my renewal quotes.

ps - you could also try looking through adverts and getting a reg no of the sort of 7.5T you'd like and using that to get a quote. If you asked a horsebox dealer i'm sure they'd understand that you need to find out if you can insure it before you buy it. I rang for quotes on mine before I actually bought it. Obviously i'm not suggesting you indulge in timewaster behaviour but it doesn't sound like you'd do that.

NFU, 7.5 tonne lorry approx 20K, any driver over 25 + my 19 yo daughter 330 quid.

Same cost for 3.5 tonne, daughter can't actually drive 7.5 tonner as she hasn't taken that test and I only have grandfather rights.

I Have been insured on my 7.5tonne since I did my test at 18 I also have done my cat C so am over qualed an it was easy to get insured. I am insured through a non horsey company just our normal insurance but my boyfriend found nfu the best for when he was getting insured on his 7.5 tonne.

Just gone through this myself, to become main driver of a 7.5t at 20. The places that would insure me that I found were: NFU, Shearwater, Brightwells, SEIB and Four Countries. But this was for a £4000 lorry so not sure what the quotes would be like for you.

To get a quote from them, just take a reg for something that for sale like what you might get. Thats what I did to make sure I could get insured.

Hope this helps

thanks for all the help :)

Really impressed with that quote for £330! thats sooo much cheaper than my insurance on a 4x4!

Will take your advice & try and get quotes using a reg of similar vehicle :) and will also enquire with my car insurance people if they insure lorries - hadn't thought of that!

Hopefully you will indulge me with answers to another question :p I may shamelessly also start a new thread if this one doesnt get noticed! Any of you with 7.5ton lorries can you recommend makes which have good payloads? Its so frustrating that so few manufacturers state their payloads of lorries and I dont really want to pay out for a Helios or Equitrek lorry unless Im forced to as obviously that beats travelling illegally!

I want to transport 2 horses only at a time but with weights of around 600kg each plus 3 people, tack, rugs, a water tank for horseshower & water to living, and an external awning. Want basic living with toilet and hob, table seating area and sleeping for at least 2.

I was contemplating buying a 3.5ton lorry for now, however if insurance isnt much different it seems pretty pointless as taking everything to a minimum I still need a payload of 1500kg and I would struggle to get that on new 3.5tons which are often expensive!

So in short anyone know of any 7.5tons with living with min1700kg payloads or 3.5tons with 1500kg payloads?

Thanks for all your help :D

Another vote for NFU when I passed my Class 2 it was only and extra £10 a month to put me on it, I was 20 when I passed and ive been on the insurance since I was 19 and the price never changd :)

As for payloads I think it all depends on the lorry. It seems to be the newer lorries that have a very small payload as they tend to have very large livings, underfloor storage etc etc.

I have a C reg cargo that has a comfortable living, sleeps four, three horses and underfloor lockers and that has a 2500kg payload. It does the job but obviously it is quite old!

Make sure you ask to see a recent plating document as this will have the unladen weight of the lorry on it and then you can work out what the payload it :)

thanks for the suggestions :)

Thats exactly the problems I'm facing with trying to buy a second hand newish box... people seem to have wanted a mobile house in a horsebox without giving a damn that they are travelling overweight & trying to find a newish 2nd hand horsebox with a simplistic living is ridiculously difficult! :(

I do like solitaire horseboxes :D will have a mooch at PRB. I LOVE the new Helios horseboxes but not entirely sure I can justify spending £50k on a horsebox :/.

My mind is now way more at ease about horsebox insurance which was the main thing so many thanks :)

I got that quote for her the same week that the company who last year insured her as a named driver on our car for 890 quid decided that this year the premium would be 3800. She'd had no accidents, claims, points or anything during that time and neither had any other drivers of the car. I was seriously considering buying her a 3.5 tonner to drive round in:eek:

ahhh its ridiculous! insurance companies are so awful. apparently car insurance has gone up from all the scamming little weasels who claim imaginary whiplash injury from non fault car accidents & then this was exaggerated further as previously honest people did the same so as to use the money to cover the hike in insurance prices caused by the original idiots! thats what they say anyway could just be that they are GREEDY!!

Between a motorbike and a 4x4 I pay thousands of pounds insurance a year and have never had an accident except for one non-fault when an idiot vanman reversed into my parked car in a car park. How can they justify their prices?! I think insurance companies are starting to believe that they are bankers! :(
