Hi all :)
hope youre all well?
I have a just turned 7 month old welsh D colt. He is an absolute chunk already at approximately 13hh and has an enormous amount of bone on him!

Although at the moment he is behaving himself the majority of the time,he is becoming stronger and stronger to handle through his foal tantrums in a standard headcollar! Any suggestions for any other headcollar that might give me that extra little bit of control? Obviously his age plays a huge factor into this!

Thanks x

Is he turned out 24/7, does he have both testicles, how much handling are you doing.
If not out for a minimum of 12 hours move to where he can be
If both testcles are there get him gelded
Dont over handle him give him time out with other youngsters to play and be a horse
A simple headcollar is best with no poll pressure and yanking on his head A horsemans halter when he is older and a pressure halter when he is ready for more serious work. Can recommend Richard Maxwell book called training your young horse for establishing some groundwork

He is booked in to be gelded on the 22nd but I am absolutely gutted about this. I wanted to leave him much longer! His testicles are there but still quite high.

I am so worried about him loosing his substance and stamp by gelding so early. I keep wanting to pull out and leaving him a little longer. March time was my ideal. He will be 7months 18 days old on the 22nd.

He will be much more manageable as a gelding you are doing the very best for by getting him done as soon as possible. It is in his best interest and a kindness too many young colts end on a spiral of cruelty and ignorance so at least you are ensuring he has a better chance of a good life

That's what the chain at the end of the lead shank is for. To go over his nose. Why do you think they use it on the race track???

People get to worried about that. If he is already so substantial, what you'll prevent is the onset of secondary sexual characteristics such as thicker neck and shoulders. Sounds like he'll be fine in that department. I have a couple of geldings and they have all the spririt and presence, didn't loose a thing. If they're of quality, they won't lose any quality.

You wont lose his stamp/substance. Most of that is developed by correct work, exercise and feeding when they are the correct age fir it.
My lad was gelded at 8months ish. He still has enough stamp/substance to win at county shows as a 2/3 year old and then to qualify for HOYS multiple times after age 6.
even now, being nearly 20, having been barely in work at all for The last year and not worked at all for the last 3 month he is still a substantial presence.

OP, please don't use a chain over the nose of a 7 month old foal. I have no beef with using a nose chain over the nose of an adult horse, where appropriate (I have done so with mine when needed), but to do that to a foal is, in my opinion, cruel and idiotic.
