8 day old baby killed

It's just such a terrible thing to happen. :-(
I've known a couple
of JR's that go berserk at the sound of a baby crying though, some instinct must kick in at the noise.

Well we don't know the circumstances, I breed Jacks and now of course the breed will take a dive in popularity. The news item I heard said the baby hadn't been mauled. Personally I would never leave any young child (even a 5 year old) alone with any dog.

A very, very sad and tragic accident. RIP :(

I'm afraid that leaving ANY dog with an 8 day old baby is stupid and negligent - and a JR!!! AND one neighbours said was a vicious little thing that would try to attack hands posting things through the letter box!!

I have 3 JR crosses - Dad and two of his daughters. And they're certainly NOT vicious! But I wouldn't leave them unattended with ANY child - and certainly not have them in the same room as a tiny baby!

Some accidents are just waiting to happen!

Papers don't seem to have the full story yet but there has been a lot of JR bashing going on for sure!

Think it was the Metro that stated the dog was vicious and had 'attacked' one of the mum's cuddly toys. She said on twitter that the toy lost an eye. Right so think that is more a dog being a dog and chewing a toy rather than carrying out a horrendous mauling on it.

Would be interested to know how the dog managed to be in a position to bite the baby.

however, again the media focuses on the breed and not the deed. There seems to be amazement that a JRT would ever attack a child. Had it been a stafford or something even remotely resembling a stafford the press would have been shrieking. This is incredibly tragic for the family, yet until the public perception of which breeds are "safe" and which, unfairly are deemed "dangerous" people will not look at themselves, their training and their actions to take responsibility for how their dogs behave. People who actually HAVE dogs and have taken time to understand how to manage them are incredulous that a dog would be allowed anywhere near a small, squeaking newborn. Regardless of what breed the dog is.

As far as the dog was concerned whatever the breed, the baby was a sqeaky snuffling thing, similar to a rat or a rabbit in the dog's mind and therefore prey!

The parents/relatives made a huge mistake however this accident happened and the dog's have lost their lives as a result but what other outcome could there be? The baby died in shocking circumstances and all involved will never forgive themsleves, but they could not have carried on living with the dogs and although rehoming could have been a possibility it probably was not their first priority at the time.

Terrible thing to happen. Of course, we don't know the whole story or all of the circumstances. I would certainly never leave any dog whatever the breed alone with a young baby/child, just not safe, common sense should prevail. I have a JR and they are terriers and they are hunters/ratters etc.
