8 horses abandoned in my friend field

My friend phoned me this morning saying that 8 horses had been dumped in one of her fields over night. 3 of them are mares which are in foal and 5 are youngsters. All of them are coloureds except one mare and a youngster (which we belive is her foal at foot). The youngsters are all quite big, we think they will make 15hh. All seem to be in a decent condition but we are going to run them into a smaller feild at the weekend so we can have a better look at them all. Police have been contacted but sounds like if my friend is happy to look after them then she can keep them as they dont think they will find the owner. How can people just abandon their animals. Lucky for the horses my friend breeds and shows heavy horses so they will be looked after.
 
I take it they're not escapee's that someone has herded into the field overnight?? Could also be that they're not abandoned put placed there for free grazing! Put a big sign on the gate saying if horses are not removed by 'x' date (ensure the date is after 7 days of arrival) horses will be assumed to be abandoned and will be sold to recompense for livery/grazing costs. If they don't go then your friend can keep or sell. Ensure she photographs the notice placed on the gate as evidence should someone come forward after the date. Also try to get someone out to scan for microchips (optimitic I know but incase they are escapees) And place a found notice in local paper, don't give too much information but enough to get owners attention if they see it.

Glad your friend is willing to look after them, and glad they've landed on their feet getting put there.
 
These horses may be owned by the travelling community who are just after some free grazing, happens fairly regularly.

Not wanting to be the voice of doom, but they could well have been 'dumped' until the owner can be bothered to come get them, and when they are bothered (having eaten someone elses nice grass) they will want them back and may not take no for an answer..
Also could they have got out and someone put them in there as a safety measure? I woul dbe putting ads up etc. don't put photos up as you want someone to be able to id them as theirs without being able to get all the details off a photo!
 
Friend had a coloured colt abandoned in her field. Contacted police etc and some months later had gypsys turn up at her yard to arrange to pick the horse up. She had looked after it and stabled it when needed etc and officially it was hers. Gypsys had already been into her yard and knew exactly where the horse was. It upset her to see him go but she had no option, either give it back or it would be taken back.
Your friends field is being used for free grazing there is no way these have been abandoned.
 
they have not escaped as there is no1 in the area who has horses and also there are lorry tracks at the gate. We dont have problems in the area with the traveling community. Have lived in the area for years and there have never been any sight of them so dont think they are traveller ponies.
My friend thinks they may belong to a girl who deals in horses but they cant get in contact with her!!!!! (a bit sus).
They are currently in one of her huge fields(she has a farm) so we will bring them into a smaller and more secure field to see if the are freeze marked, shod etc. We will up a 7 day notice up by the field gate but her farm isnt really in a place where there are many passers by - if any.
